It was all thanks to a new Google Lab tool that I recently tried. The new Google Lab tool made me look at NotebookLM differently, as it spelled out everything NotebookLM doesn’t get right.<\/p>\n
After spending a few days with the Google Lab’s Learn Your Way, I realized that I wanted NotebookLM to be exactly like this. Here is why.<\/p>\n

\t\t This unlikely duo upgraded my learning routine<\/p>\n When Google launched Learn Your Way<\/a>, the Mountain View tech giant said that the AI tool is “built for the student.”<\/p>\n However, I didn’t take Google’s words for granted and recently tested it to check whether it’s actually good for students.<\/p>\n I was more than impressed after testing it. But that’s not what excites me the most about Learn Your Way. Of all the impressive features it has, its approach to becoming students’ companion impresses me the most.<\/p>\n Learn Your Way actually stands up to its name. You can choose how you want to learn a specific topic using the AI learning tool, thanks to the personalization feature.<\/p>\n Not only that, but it also allows you to choose whether you want to understand the source material through Mindmaps, Audio lessons, Slides & narration, or Immersive text.<\/p>\n These options are easily accessible when you open the topic and aren’t hidden behind anything. All you do is select the topic and how you want to learn to get started.<\/p>\n What Learn Your Way gets right that NotebookLM doesn’t<\/p>\n Before opening the chapter, Learn Your Way will ask you to choose the personalization you want to explore. This is you selecting whether you are a middle school student or an undergrad and what interests you the most.<\/p>\n For example, I went to the Chemistry section and clicked Carbon. It then showed me two personalization options to choose from: Middle schooler who likes stars and planets, and Undergrad who likes painting.<\/p>\n If you choose painting, it’ll give you at least one example, which will link your interest to the topic you are studying, to help you quickly understand what it wants to say.<\/p>\n This is truly a game-changer, though I would have loved more personalization options. Something like explaining a topic to someone who likes the game of cricket.<\/p>\n It also highlights the sentences with personalized examples. One of the personalized examples beautifully explained the atomic scale by using a book-based analogy.<\/p>\n It also has MCQ questions embedded within the text. So, after reading a paragraph, you can quickly test your knowledge. The tool also encourages you to take a quiz after the end of every lesson to check your understanding of the topic.<\/p>\n None of these is entirely new for NotebookLM users. You can generate a quiz, as well as ask how you want to understand a topic in NotebookLM.<\/p>\n The difference is the execution. The quiz is embedded in the text, available to users almost instantly. This is not the case with NotebookLM, as it takes some time to generate a quiz, depending on how many sources it has and the difficulty level you choose.<\/p>\n If I were a student, I would have liked Learn Your Way’s approach more than that of NotebookLM.<\/p>\n There are so many similarities between the two that I couldn’t help but question the very existence of Learn Your Way as a separate learning tool when you already have something as powerful as NotebookLM.<\/p>\n I’m aware that Google Lab tools are intended for testing, allowing users to test early-stage AI tools and prototypes before turning them into mainstream products.<\/p>\n I have no problem with Google testing AI tools with users, but not everything needs to meet the same fate as NotebookLM, which was initially available as a Google Labs tool and later turned into a mainstream product.<\/p>\n It makes no sense to have two similar products with pretty much the same capabilities. Both tools allow users to upload sources, generate quizzes, and explain topics the way you want. Mindmaps and audio and video explanations are also common features between the two.<\/p>\n However, the way these features are implemented in NotebookLM and Learn Your Way is different. I found Learn Your Way much simpler and more effective, while NotebookLM focuses on deeper customization<\/a>.<\/p>\n For example, while Learn Your Way cleverly introduces quizzes inside the text, NotebookLM allows users to select the difficulty level of the quiz and select the number of questions they want in it. You can also make the Audio Overview interactive in NotebookLM.<\/p>\n Google has the answer, and it just needs to bring everything together<\/p>\n I want the best of both worlds. That only happens when Learn Your Way merges into NotebookLM and not the other way round.<\/p>\n While I don’t care how the merger happens, it’d make sense for Google to port Learn Your Way<\/a>‘s features to NotebookLM because that’s comparatively easier.<\/p>\n NotebookLM is also a bigger brand and offers more customizations than Learn Your Way.<\/p>\n
