{"id":576905,"date":"2026-04-02T07:12:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T07:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/576905\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T07:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T07:12:09","slug":"mother-becomes-face-of-breast-cancer-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/576905\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother becomes face of breast cancer campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A mother of three, who has experienced a breast cancer diagnosis, will star in a national charity advertising campaign to &#8220;support the nearly one million people that are living with or beyond breast cancer&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paula Van Santen, 51, from Banbury in Oxfordshire, was diagnosed in April 2022 and opted for a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery in June the same year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">UK&#8217;s leading charity Breast Cancer Now said it was its &#8220;bold ambition&#8221; that by 2050, &#8220;everyone with breast cancer will live and live well&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The campaign has been informed and shaped by a survey of more than 3,000 people affected by the disease.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A woman looking at herself in the mirror. She is wearing a white bra.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0e415ca897c790df1e623facfaf189f7.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Van Santen (not pictured) described a breast cancer diagnosis as &#8220;devastating because you don&#8217;t know which path it&#8217;s gonna take you down&#8221; [Breast Cancer Now]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The charity said that <a href=\"https:\/\/breastcancernow.org\/about-us\/media\/press-releases\/almost-one-million-people-are-living-with-or-beyond-breast-cancer-and-set-to-rise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:new data showed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;new data showed&quot;}\" class=\"link \">new data showed<\/a> 920,000 people lived with or beyond a diagnosis of breast cancer in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It said the figure was &#8220;projected to rise to over 1.4 million by 2050&#8221;, which is why it committed to &#8220;Breast Cancer Now until we&#8217;re Breast Cancer Never&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As part of the campaign, Van Santen will be on TV, radio and online, alongside Bury actor, producer and breast cancer advocate Victoria Ekanoye.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Van Santen described the diagnosis as &#8220;devastating because you don&#8217;t know which path it&#8217;s gonna take you down&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;But I was optimistic, research has come on so far and you know that there is a future for yourself and you look to the future rather than to the now,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After her surgery, a CT scan result in July 2022 showed the cancer had moved to her lungs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Van Santen said that meant her disease classed &#8220;as incurable, but treatable&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It will eventually wake up and start to spread again but at the moment it&#8217;s not active.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Two women sitting in a room, smiling at each other. and was still working and travelling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I want to support the nearly one million people that are living with or beyond breast cancer, just like me,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I want them to be able to have the confidence to speak up, get the support they need through Breast Cancer Now and other charities, and I think it&#8217;s really important that we bring that forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Charity chief executive Claire Rowney said they were &#8220;so grateful&#8221; to Paula and the rest of the cast for sharing their experiences and making the campaign &#8220;so powerful&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Behind these figures are too many human lives being touched and ripped apart by this devastating disease,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The need for our work has never been greater and we&#8217;re relentless in our determination to be Breast Cancer Now until we&#8217;re Breast Cancer Never.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The charity said it would be doubling its research spend and &#8220;supercharging progress&#8221;
