Courtney Love<\/a> was the latest guest on Billy Corgan<\/a>\u2018s The Magnificent Others podcast, and a lot of tea was spilled among the two old frenemies turned friends again. One of the conversations involved some harsh words about Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pair started talking about \u201cindie gatekeepers,\u201d and Gordon and her ex-husband, Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, came up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI barely know Thurston, but he was never a gatekeeper,\u201d said Corgan. \u201cBut his partner was the worst.\u201d<\/p>\n

Love then chimed in, \u201cShe was the worst, and she kind of still is, \u201d with Corgan adding, \u201cOh she\u2019s still rockin\u2019 the gatekeeping.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a brief exchange about how Kim\u2019s memoir, Girl in a Band<\/a>, had some disparaging remarks about both Love and Corgan, as well as Lana Del Rey, Love continued, \u201c[Kim] was really horrible in the \u201990s. I remember being in Holland, hanging out with you [Corgan], and they were so mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

To which Corgan recalled, \u201cYes, I came into their dressing room because we were all playing this festival \u2014 Kurt [Cobain] was playing, Nine Inch Nails was playing, [The Pixies\u2019] Black Francis was playing, Urge Overkill was there\u2026 I was a fan [of Sonic Youth], and I came in to pay my respects, and she treated me so rudely by her, and that was the beginning of the horrible relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

As mentioned, Gordon didn\u2019t have kind words to say about Love and Corgan in her 2015 book, writing, \u201cI have a low tolerance for manipulative, egomaniacal behavior, and usually have to remind myself that the person might be mentally ill\u2026 Courtney asked us for advice about her \u2018secret affair\u2019 with Billy Corgan. I thought, Ewwww, at even the mention of Billy Corgan, whom nobody liked because he was such a crybaby, and Smashing Pumpkins took themselves way too seriously and were in no way punk rock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turning back to the new conversation between Love and Corgan, at one point the Hole frontwoman struggled to remember her late husband Kurt Cobain\u2019s lyrics to Nirvana<\/a>\u2018s \u201cHeart-Shaped Box,\u201d before noting, \u201c\u2018Hey, wait, I got a new complaint\/ Forever in debt to your priceless advice\u2019 \u2026 that\u2019s about Kim. That\u2019s literally about Kim. He was so mad at her. Kurt\u2019s whole thing was\u2026 he hid his light under a bushel for Bleach, because, one, Seattle, which he wasn\u2019t from, two, Kim Gordon.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cWhen I first saw Nirvana in Portland, Oregon, there was \u2026 Jason Everman [who played in Nirvana and Soundgarden]. And he had long hair like a Soundgarden guy. And I watched Kurt at a little club called Satyricon turn his Fender all the way down. I saw it. I\u2019m not stupid. I saw it and that\u2019s what led to me and him having an interaction. I was like, \u2018You fake guitar player\u2026 I get it.\u2019 Right. But that was the Seattle element. And I didn\u2019t know till I hung out with him about the Kim\u2026. I know I was scarred by Kim. So scarred that I had to write her a letter kissing her ass to get\u2026 you don\u2019t go for the husband, the cool husband. You go for the wife. And she produced my first album to her eternal regret.\u201d<\/p>\n

As far as the Nirvana lyric, for years many had thought that the song was about Love, but Courtney is suggesting that Cobain was actually expressing his disenchantment with Gordon\u2019s influence over him, as Sonic Youth played a part in getting Nirvana signed to DGC Records.<\/p>\n

Courtney then went on to say, \u201cLet me cap this conversation. I\u2019ve got the best story. It\u2019s really quick. So when Thurston and Kim got divorced \u2014 cuz you know their daughter is in Chicago at school. Don\u2019t know if you know that. Kim sold all of Thurston\u2019s vinyl for a vast amount of money behind his back to pay for her kid\u2019s college education. It is one of the greatest things I\u2019ve ever heard. Let\u2019s move on because these people are dicks, were dicks. I mean one was a dick.\u201d<\/p>\n
