href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/personal-data\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">personal data<\/a> of Canadians as part of a major overhaul of the <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/privacy-act\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Privacy Act.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The act governs how federal agencies collect, use and disclose personal information, and gives people the right to see and correct data the government holds about them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/treasury-board-secretariat\/services\/access-information-privacy\/access-information\/privacy-act-modernization-policy-approaches\/2026-review-privacy-act-policy-approaches.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In a new policy paper<\/a>, the government proposes allowing federal agencies to reuse and share personal data with each other and with their provincial, territorial or municipal partners, without consent, if it improves services or programs.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" bolstering protection by recognizing privacy as a fundamental right and requiring an assessment when a federal program uses personal data to make a decision about someone.<\/p>\n<p>The Privacy Act has not changed substantially since it took effect in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The government says comments and feedback on the policy approaches will be collected through <a href=\"https:\/\/forms-formulaires.alpha.canada.ca\/en\/id\/cmn4w60h100pjwy01wqv3m72u\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an online submission form<\/a> until July
