Suleyman is Microsoft\u2019s inaugural CEO of AI, but after the company underwent a large-scale restructuring in mid-March, he\u2019s handed off some duties and shifted focus to chasing superintelligence. Though the news was only made public last month, he tells The Verge, he\u2019d been preparing for the transition for as many as nine months \u2014 and though renegotiating Microsoft\u2019s contract with OpenAI is the thing that officially \u201cunlocked [Microsoft\u2019s] ability to pursue superintelligence,\u201d he\u2019d been planning even before the ink was dry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cThis has been a long-held plan,\u201d he said, adding that achieving superintelligence was \u201cpurely my focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Superintelligence \u2014 along with AGI, or artificial general intelligence \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/845890\/ai-companies-rebrand-agi-artificial-general-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has a vague and shifting definition in the AI industry.<\/a> For Suleyman, it\u2019s strictly about business and productivity. \u201cSuperintelligence is really about, \u2018Are these models capable of delivering product value for the millions of enterprises that depend on us to deliver world-class language models?\u2019\u201d Suleyman said. \u201cThat\u2019s really our focus. We want to deliver for developers, for enterprises, and many, many consumers.\u201d AI companies face ratcheting pressure to deliver more revenue, and Microsoft\u2019s plans echo a new strategy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/902368\/openai-sora-dead-ai-video-generation-competition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at OpenAI<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Microsoft\u2019s reorganization combined its enterprise and consumer teams under the Copilot AI banner. While Suleyman will still working on big-picture strategy, Jacob Andreou, who was formerly a corporate vice president of product and growth for Microsoft AI, became its executive vice president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/microsoft-seeks-more-coherence-in-ai-efforts-with-copilot-reorganization-a985b374\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leading<\/a> the newly combined teams\u2019 engineering, growth, product, and design initiatives. That shift left room for Suleyman to devote his time to pursuing superintelligence and developing new frontier AI models for Microsoft in a time when the competition between leading AI companies \u2014 and the pressure to attract new paying consumers and enterprise customers \u2014 is steeper than ever before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">On Thursday, Microsoft debuted a new transcription model that it hopes will do just that \u2014 and, as it\u2019s \u201chalf the GPU cost of the other state-of-the-art models,\u201d per Suleyman, it\u2019s a \u201chuge cost-saving\u201d for Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The company bills MAI-Transcribe-1 as \u201cpushing the frontier of speech recognition\u201d with its ability to transcribe meetings, caption videos, and analyze call center exchanges in 25 languages. Microsoft\u2019s blog posts announcing the model say it was built for \u201cchallenging\u201d recording conditions including background noise, low-quality audio, and overlapping speech, trained on a combination of \u201chuman-curated\u201d and machine-transcribed transcripts. Suleyman said the source recordings are a mix of controlled sound booth data and contractors tasked with recording themselves amid background noise, from busy streets to kids running around, plus \u201cvast amounts of data from the open web.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Along with existing voice and image-generation models MAI-Voice-1 and MAI-Image-2, the new transcription model is now available on Microsoft Foundry and as part of the new Microsoft AI Playground. It\u2019s the first time these models are \u201cbroadly available for commercial use,\u201d according to Microsoft. MAI-Transcribe-1 can handle audio files in MP3, WAV, and FLAC formats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Suleyman attributes the new model\u2019s performance in tests to a small, focused 10-person team. He says the modeling team has been \u201cliberated from any of the bureaucracy,\u201d as they have a surrounding team that\u2019s responsible for managing vendors, finding data to download, and more.
