The Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> and top prospect Konnor Griffin are finalizing a nine-year, $140 million contract extension, according to ESPN\u2019s Buster Olney.<\/p>\n

News of a potential deal came on the same day that multiple reports indicate the Pirates will call up the 19-year-old shortstop for their home opener on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If finalized, this will be the largest deal ever for a player who has yet to make his major-league debut. Griffin was selected with the ninth overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft out of high school in Mississippi, one year after the Pirates took Paul Skenes<\/a> No. 1 overall out of LSU.<\/p>\n

Griffin appears set to join a growing list of anticipated prospects to sign long-term deals before making their MLB debuts. Both shortstop Colt Emerson of the Seattle Mariners<\/a> and shortstop Cooper Pratt of the Milwaukee Brewers<\/a> reached eight-year deals earlier this season.<\/p>\n

Griffin hit .171 with four home runs in 16 spring training games for Pittsburgh this year and was tearing it up through five games at Triple-A Indianapolis, slashing .438\/.571\/.625. with one RBI and three stolen bases. <\/p>\n

Griffin is the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n
