{"id":578843,"date":"2026-04-03T04:27:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T04:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/578843\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T04:27:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T04:27:18","slug":"nunavik-has-highest-number-of-mmiwg2s-cases-in-quebec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/578843\/","title":{"rendered":"Nunavik has highest number of MMIWG2S+ cases in Quebec"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nunavik has the most cases involving missing or murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people of all of Quebec\u2019s regions, according to a new database unveiled Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Workers with non-profit organization Quebec Native Women and the University of Quebec in Outaouais, who have been <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/group-creating-database-to-track-quebecs-mmiwg-cases\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">working since 2023<\/a>, released numbers they have compiled so far during an event in Quebec City.<\/p>\n<p>The data shows 124 Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people went missing or were murdered in Quebec between 1950 and February 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Nunavik alone has 39 cases, with 12 of those coming out of Puvirnituq. The next highest is the region of Montreal, with 13 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Two more categories will be added to the map, including suspicious deaths and deaths with aggravating circumstances, said Marjolaine \u00c9tienne, president of Quebec Native Women.<\/p>\n<p>She said that will add another 100 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-five per cent of the documented disappearances in the database happened while the victim was outside of their home community.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260320-ncc\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/260320.100.95.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00c9tienne said the map is part of a history that has been following Indigenous women for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a topic so sensitive, it is a topic that touches Indigenous women, girls, and families,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The map does not represent all cases, and project leaders say they intend to continue adding cases as they discover more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo often, we, Indigenous women, have the impression we do not have rights,\u201d said \u00c9tienne. \u201cBut we do have rights.
