{"id":579143,"date":"2026-04-03T07:48:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T07:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/579143\/"},"modified":"2026-04-03T07:48:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T07:48:16","slug":"soaring-gas-prices-prompt-renewed-calls-for-government-fuel-tax-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/579143\/","title":{"rendered":"Soaring gas prices prompt renewed calls for government fuel tax relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A day after U.S. President Donald Trump made a televised address to the nation about the war in Iran, the price of oil took another jump with the American benchmark West Texas Crude (WTI) nearing US$114 per barrel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And with no end to the Middle East conflict in sight, the price of gasoline also continued its recent increase, selling at many Edmonton stations for about $1.74 per litre on Thursday \u2014 even higher in Calgary at $1.75 per litre.<\/p>\n<p>Its a tough pill for many Albertans to swallow in such an oil-rich province.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAnother jump in the price of gasoline is prompting calls for the federal and provincial governments to provide drivers with some relief by cutting gas taxes.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA buck 74 \u2014 crazy price,\u201d said Paul Marsh as he filled up his vehicle in Calgary on Thursday. \u201cI can\u2019t afford to drive every day. I can\u2019t wait to get back on my motorbike because it burns a lot less gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do appreciate the supply chain is such that its affects everything from food prices, Amazon, everybody is going to be paying higher prices,\u201d added Mike Shymka. \u201cIt\u2019s regrettable for many people who rely on gas. It\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He agrees with recent suggestions that governments should consider providing some relief by cutting gas taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconomic policy is, during rough recessionary times, the government is to add more to help people and when things are good then, you know, take a little bit more tax,\u201d said Shymka.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Soaring fuel costs impacting package deliveries, food prices in Canada'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/260402-HEATHER.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:49<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSoaring fuel costs impacting package deliveries, food prices in Canada\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Asked if and when the provincial government will be offering any relief to Albertans, Finance Minister Nate Horner, on his way into the legislature on Thursday, offered no promises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of days left in the year. I did table a $9.4 billion deficit. And I will also remind people that even if that situation improves, we\u2019ll update you through the quarters,\u201d said Horner.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still bound by our spending rules within the fiscal framework.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAsked about the province cutting gas taxes, on his way into the Alberta legislature on Thursday, Finance Minister Nate Horner said the early it could happen would be around July 1.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGlobal News\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/about-fuel-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Alberta\u2019s fuel tax<\/a> is 13 cents per litre for regular gas, and four cents per litre for marked gasoline and marked diesel which is only available to authorized use is equipment like tractors and generators instead of personal vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/money123.jpg\" alt=\"Get expert insights, Q&amp;A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly money news<\/p>\n<p>Get expert insights, Q&amp;A on markets, housing, inflation, and personal finance information delivered to you every Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Under Alberta\u2019s gas tax relief program, quarterly reductions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/fuel-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">provincial fuel tax<\/a> are introduced when WTI averages at least US$80 per barrel over a review period of 20 trading days.<\/p>\n<p>Between $80 and $89.99 per barrel of oil, the province provides tax relief of between 4.5 cents and 9 cents per litre of gas.<\/p>\n<p>When oil hits $90 per barrel the fuel tax is suspended. So for the next quarter it would be from May 18th to June 15th where it would be monitored and then July 1st would be the trigger,\u201d said Horner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it makes a ton of sense that you have a longer monitoring period because once it does come off at any level it remains off for the next three months. So imagine a situation where July 1 our tax comes off completely \u2014 oil can plummet the next day (and) it will still remain off for next three months. So a little bit of delayed gratification there, but I think the rationale is strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Despite Horner\u2019s insistence that the province needs to wait before deciding on a gas tax cut, he supports<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11756711\/conservatives-federal-tax-diesel-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> the idea of the federal government suspending its fuel taxes until the end of the year<\/a>, as suggested this week by federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.<\/p>\n<p>Poilievre said Australia cut its excise tax by 26 cents per litre and Spain cut its sales tax by 30 cents per litre, saying he thinks Ottawa should do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Poilievre calls on Carney to suspend fuel excise tax, clean fuel standard'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ONLINE_STILL_POILIEVRE.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t0:43<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPoilievre calls on Carney to suspend fuel excise tax, clean fuel standard\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s something the feds want to consider,\u201d said Horner.\u00a0 \u201cThe fuel taxes from the feds \u2014 I think it\u2019s about 25 cents a liter, about 10 cents in excise, maybe seven in clean fuel and eight in GST.
