\n\tZach Cregger<\/a> remains adamant about not remaking any story within the \u201cResident Evil<\/a>\u201d saga for his big-screen adaptation.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough he wants to have an original plot, the \u201cWeapons<\/a>\u201d director told Inverse<\/a> that he\u2019s \u201cnot breaking the rules of the games.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, \u201cI am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I\u2019m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCregger will direct the movie based on the hugely popular horror video game franchise. He has written the script alongside his co-writer, Shay Hatten. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tConstantin\u2019s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment\u2019s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.<\/p>\n

\n\tCregger is set on creating a project that is \u201coutside of the characters of the games,\u201d but he reassured fans that the game\u2019s roots will be respected.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is obedient to the lore of the games, it\u2019s just a different story,\u201d Cregger said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to tell Leon\u2019s story, because Leon\u2019s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe original \u201cResident Evil\u201d was released in 1994 as a PlayStation game before being ported to other platforms. In 2002, the first \u201cResident Evil\u201d film premiered in theaters with Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez as the leads.<\/p>\n

\n\tJovovich went on to lead the following \u201cResident Evil: Apocalypse\u201d (2004), \u201cResident Evil: Extinction\u201d (2007), \u201cResident Evil: Afterlife\u201d (2010), \u201cResident Evil: Retribution\u201d (2012) and \u201cResident Evil: The Final Chapter\u201d (2017). In 2021, filmmaker Johannes Roberts took on the franchise reboot \u201cResident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City\u201d as the writer and director.<\/p>\n

\n\tAhead of the Aug. 8 release of \u201cWeapons,\u201d Cregger told Variety<\/a> he hopes to capture the cinematic experience of \u201cResident Evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThose games pioneered something special,\u201d he said. \u201cThe pacing of those games is so unique and effective, and just being locked in with one character moving from point A to point B, knowing you\u2019re going to pass through this gauntlet of terror, and you\u2019ve got to be methodical and thoughtful about it. That\u2019s cool. That\u2019s cinematic.
