\nANNUAL GUERRE DES TUQUES COMPETITION BROUGHT COMPETITION BROUGHT OUT STUDENTS FROM FOUR DIFFERENT TEAMS THAT STAYED ALL DAY TO PERFECT THEIR CREATIONS<\/p>\n
On Saturday Jan 31, five teams woke early, layered their snow pants and mittens, and marched to the U of O campus for the 9 a.m. start. They arrived to piles of snow provided by the university and students quickly got to work on their snow forts. This year\u2019s Guerre des Tuques was underway,\u00a0 a long-time U of O snow fort competition in University Square.<\/p>\n
Teams included the Psychology students, the Engineering students, the Sociology and Anthropology, and the Arts students.\u00a0 Some teams used shovels to pile snow chunks into walls, while others dug tunnels and caves into mounds of snow. University of Ottawa\u2019s Student Union (UOSU) volunteers kept participants motivated with music, free hot chocolate, and energy drinks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
By sundown, teams\u2019 creative plans started to take shape. The Psychology students built their rendition of Barbie\u2019s Dream House. Engineering students dug an igloo, decorating it with indoor lights and topped it off with a model outdoor bar. The Sociology and Anthropology team built an impressive Alice in Wonderland\u2013themed structure with a looking glass themed entrance leading to a magically decorated interior. The Arts students built a large home complete with a snow couch and a staircase to a second-floor slide. Students kept working until 1 a.m. to make sure their structures froze by morning.<\/p>\n
By 9 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 1, the structures were finished. City of Ottawa Councillor for Rideau-Vanier, St\u00e9phanie Plante, arrived to judge the creations alongside UOSU President Jack Coen and Deputy Student Life Commissioner Olivier Baril. Students were judged on their creations by theme, presentation, and their chants and enthusiasm.<\/p>\n
After touring all the snow forts, the judges finalized their rankings. The Psychology students, self-named the \u201csnow Barbies\u201d won the day with their towering Barbie\u2019s house, inlaid with chiseled bricks and complete with an ice slide. The team elected not to take the Nordik Spa gift cards and chose to split the cash prize instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n
