For the first time in his career,\u00a0Quinn Hughes<\/a>\u00a0lined up against the\u00a0Vancouver Canucks<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Though Hughes was mostly contained, his Wild rolled to a 5-2 victory over his floundering former team.<\/p>\n

In an\u00a0interview with\u00a0The Athletic<\/a>\u00a0prior to puck drop, Hughes looked back at his 501-game Canucks tenure, which ended after a trade in December.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to blame me for over-trying, for overdoing it, then honestly, I\u2019m good with it. A couple of years ago, that sort of stuff would\u2019ve bothered me, but it doesn\u2019t now. I\u2019m the one who looks at myself in the mirror, and I\u2019m good with everything I\u2019ve done,\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m at peace with everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hughes said \u201che gave everything\u201d he had to the Canucks, who drafted him seventh overall in 2018. The American turned into the team\u2019s captain before he was shipped off for Zeev Buium, Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round pick.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo look at the years prior, too, when there was all sorts of nonsense going on, and I know I was always doing everything I could to make sure my game was in a good place and elevating it for the team. I tried to do that again this year. I had a great summer, and it just didn\u2019t happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Some of that so-called \u201cnonsense\u201d included a reported rift between J.T. Miller and forward Elias Pettersson last season as the Canucks sank from 50-win Pacific Division champions the year prior all the way out of the playoffs.<\/p>\n

As a result of the infighting, Miller was traded to the New York Rangers in a mid-season deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a top-five player for us the year prior. He had (103) points, PK, power play, taking defensive-zone draws. \u2026 There were nights I\u2019d watch him and just think, \u2018This guy is unbelievable,’\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo lose that guy the very next year \u2026 that was probably a fracture of everything. And yet, on some level, it felt like you could see it coming for years, I would say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller\u2019s exit was just part of an exodus that also included Nikita Zadorov, Elias Lindholm, Conor Garland, Tyler Myers and, of course, Hughes himself.<\/p>\n

Thanks to a Canucks back-to-back, Hughes wasn\u2019t able to catch up with old teammates ahead of Friday\u2019s game. He said after that it was \u201ca little weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think that, you know, you move on, and I\u2019m happy to be here right now. Probably being in Vancouver would be a little bit weirder than this. But yeah, as I said, it was nice that we got the win, and we have a big weekend coming up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
