After a week-long rescue effort, officials have admitted that a humpback whale stranded off Germany’s northern coast will likely die. The whale first got stuck on March 23 near a sandbank off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein and was freed using excavators and dredges. It swam 50 kilometres into an inlet near the island of Poel, where it became trapped once again.<\/p>\n

Burkard Baschek, scientific director of the Ocean Museum in Germany and coordinator of the rescue effort, informed the media on Wednesday (Apr 1) that the whale was breathing at highly irregular intervals.<\/p>\n

“We’re of the firm opinion the animal will die there,” Baschek was quoted as saying by the BBC<\/a>. “The approach of maximum rest and respect for nature demands at some point that we let it go.”<\/p>\n

Drone photos showed little sign of activity in the sediment under the 12-15 metre animal. It barely reacted when approached. Baschek said rescuers would have to encourage the whale to free itself, but the attempts would be ‘futile’ as the poor animal had no strength left.<\/p>\n

‘We Did Everything’<\/p>\n

Local environment minister Till Backhaus said the rescuers had “tried everything” to give the whale a chance at survival, calling the situation an “exceptional tragedy”.<\/p>\n

“We did everything we could to give it a chance. This is a unique tragedy. But it chose this path for himself,” added Backhaus.<\/p>\n

The whale is low on energy and suffering from a skin condition caused by the lower salt levels of the Baltic Sea. It remains unclear how it swam into the Baltic Sea, which is far from its natural habitat.<\/p>\n
