The 2026 GP Miguel Indurain<\/a> crowned a rider who has won it back in the past. Ion Izagirre<\/a> has taken Cofidis<\/a>‘ fourth win of the season with a performance reminiscent of his best days on the bike.<\/p>\n

The breakaway of the day was formed by Carlos Garc\u00eda Pierna, Sinuh\u00e9 Fern\u00e1ndez, Unai Aznar, Louis Ferreira and Rafael Dur\u00e3es. The race featured a final circuit around Estella-Lizzara which, after 200 kilometers, would crown either a climber or puncheur as the race winner. Last year it was Thibau Nys who wook the win, but this time around the race would be attacked all-out from further away.<\/p>\n

With the likes of Carlos Verona and H\u00e9ctor Alvar\u00e9z of the defending champion’s team on the attack, dangerous attacks began as soon as the riders entered the final 50 kilometers. Eventually two riders in Antonio Tiberi and Julien Bernard managed to ride away, however it proved to be too far from the finish, and the efforts didn’t pay off as they were soon after caught.<\/p>\n


\nThey were caught by another group with 24 kilometers to go which included several other of the main favourites to the race. 11 riders were then in front, and in the first of the final consecutive three climbs Ion Izagirre launched a powerful attack which could only be followed by Quinn Simmons<\/a>. Several others were caught whilst Markel Beloki was left in the chase; with the peloton then losing around 25 seconds into the final two climbs. Beloki caught up, however near the limit.<\/p>\n

The final ramp was 500 meters long at 10%, in which Izagirre was in the front at the very base, and paced his way to the summit. The Basque rider’s climbing abilities were simply superior on the day and he dispatched his two group companions. He took a solo win, with Simmons defended his second place. Beloki was caught, but his teammate Alex Baudin managed to save EF’s day and ride to the final spot on the podium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The 2026 GP Miguel Indurain crowned a rider who has won it back in the past.
