I have designed them, laid out the surveys for them, operated virtually every type of construction equipment, supervised road construction, been licensed to drive almost every vehicle on the road, and ride a bicycle.<\/p>\nThe biggest problem on the roads is that the police don\u2019t enforce the Motor Vehicle Act with respect to automobile drivers. It is rare to go on a 10k ride and not have at least one incident of a motorist intentionally violating the MVA. Whether it is intentionally forcing me to stop in the middle of an intersection when I stopped at the stop sign and had the right of way to have a driver with a might-is-right philosophy bully their way past me, or most frequently, a motorist blocking a cycling lane.<\/p>\n
The worst are delivery drivers who seem to feel the best place to stop in a cycling lane is in the middle of a corner. Often, the police take the view that because the driver is dropping a package off, they have more right in a cycling lane than a cyclist.<\/p>\n
If the police enforced the recent amendments to the MVA with respect to how far an automobile should be from a vulnerable road user, many cycling lanes would not be needed.<\/p>\n
