Actor\u00a0Paul Reubens<\/a>\u00a0never got the opportunity to sit across from Johnny Carson as a guest on \u201cThe Tonight Show,\u201d<\/a> and he always wondered why.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the book \u201cLove Johnny Carson,\u201d<\/a> written by Mark Malkoff, the actor, known for playing the iconic Pee-Wee Herman<\/a> was not invited to be a guest on the show with Carson in the hosting seat because, at the time, \u201cReubens was only going on shows \u2018in character\u2019 as Pee-Wee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCarson wouldn\u2019t put on guests that were \u2018in character\u2019 if he thought the home audience might be confused if they were real or not,\u201d Malkoff wrote. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the same reason Carson refused to book Gilbert Gottfried or Bobcat Goldthwait.\u201d<\/p>\n

The author explained that Carson only made exceptions for people when \u201cit was plainly obvious that it was a \u2018put on,’\u201d citing Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein) or Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello) as examples of exceptions to Carson\u2019s rule.<\/p>\n

Malkoff wrote that Carson\u2019s rule was in effect from the beginning of his show, noting he \u201cwas convinced that first time guest Bob Uecker\u201d was a guest on his show in 1969, that he was a \u201ccomedian \u2018pretending\u2019 to be a former Major League baseball player\u201d and that a staff member had to show him newspaper articles to prove he wasn\u2019t pretending.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarson\u2019s biggest question if a guest was real or going on in character was singer Tiny Tim, who debuted in 1968. Carson, by the end of Tiny\u2019s debut on \u2018Tonight,\u2019 figured out that Tiny was genuine. The next year, in 1969, Tiny Tim got married to Miss Vicki on Carson\u2019s Tonight resulting in 40 million viewers tuning in.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Reubens was never a guest on the \u201cTonight Show\u201d<\/a> with Carson in the hosting chair, he did appear in an episode while Joan Rivers served as a guest host.<\/p>\n

In 1985, Reubens was a guest on the \u201cTonight Show\u201d for a Halloween episode while Rivers guest-hosted in place of Carson. <\/p>\n

Reubens also appeared as the first guest on Rivers\u2019 late-night talk show two years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cPee-Wee appealed more to Rivers\u2019 younger, hipper audience,\u201d Malkoff wrote, while Carson\u2019s older viewership might not have appreciated that kind of humor.<\/p>\n

A number of celebrities have found themselves on the infamous \u201cTonight Show\u201d ban list.<\/p>\n

According to Malkoff, many top celebrities were barred from appearing as guests during his tenure as the show\u2019s host, including\u00a0Ellen DeGeneres<\/a>, Jay Leno, William Shatner<\/a> and others.<\/p>\n

Leno<\/a> appeared on the show a number of times before getting banned, a decision made after his fifth appearance in February 1978, when \u201cthe audience laughs were so light that Johnny decided never to invite him back,\u201d according to Malkoff\u2019s book.<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight Show\u201d stand-up talent scout Jim McCawley wrote in his unpublished book that producers were told by Carson not to invite Leno back. <\/p>\n

Malkoff wrote that McCawley tried to fight for Leno, but producer Peter Lassally shut him down.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Johnny just doesn\u2019t like him. He doesn\u2019t like his jokes,\u2019 said Peter,\u201d Malkoff wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s not going to change. \u2026 Once he doesn\u2019t like someone, he doesn\u2019t start liking them later.\u201d<\/p>\n
