\n\tWahoo! Universal and Illumination\u2019s animated sequel \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie<\/a>\u201d has activated the domestic box office with $130 million in its opening weekend and powered to $190 million from 4,252 theaters in its first five days of release.<\/p>\n

\n\tThese blockbuster figures rank as the year\u2019s largest domestic debut, ahead of March\u2019s \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d with $80.5 million. However they ever-so-slightly trail its franchise predecessor, 2023\u2019s \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie,\u201d which ignited to $146 million over the traditional weekend and $204 million in its first five days. Thanks to the enduring appeal of family films and a multi-generational love for the Nintendo video game, \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie\u201d became a four-quadrant smash in 2023 with $1.3 billion globally.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the international box office, \u201cSuper Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d collected $182.4 million from 78 markets for a dazzling global start of $372.5 million. By comparison, the first \u201cMario\u201d earned\u00a0$171 million overseas and stellar $375 million worldwide in the same timeframe.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThese are outstanding numbers,\u201d says David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. \u201cSo far, the movie is holding most of the first film\u2019s audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis also marks the second-biggest domestic launch of all time for Illumination, the animation empire founded by Chris Meledandri. The prolific producer, whose company has an exclusive partnership with Universal, has fielded such kid-friendly hits as the \u201cDespicable Me\u201d and \u201cMinions\u201d franchise, \u201cSing\u201d and \u201cThe Secret Life of Pets.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018The Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u2019 is thrilling audiences worldwide,\u201d says Universal\u2019s domestic distribution chief Jim Orr. \u201cIncredible to note that this is Chris Meledandri\u2019s 16th movie in 16 years, an amazing run that continues again this summer with another event title.\u201d This July\u2019s \u201cMinions & Monsters\u201d is poised to be another huge hit for the studio.<\/p>\n

\n\tAgainst a $110 million production budget, \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d will be massively profitable. Aaron Horvath\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Jelenic\u00a0returned to direct the sequel, which follows the Brooklyn-based plumbers known as Mario and Luigi as they venture into outer space. Audiences loved the film, though the \u201cA-\u201d grade on CinemaScore exit polls is slightly worse than the original\u2019s \u201cA\u201d rating. Critics were less\u2026 enthusiastic, with Variety\u2019s Owen Gleiberman<\/a> calling the film \u201cfrenetic and disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cKids love the movie,\u201d notes Gross, who adds that \u201cfamily moviegoing is leading the industry now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d towered over box office charts, but it wasn\u2019t this weekend\u2019s only new release. A24\u2019s dark comedy \u201cThe Drama<\/a>,\u201d starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, started strong in third place with $14.4 million from 3,087 screens. That\u2019s above A24\u2019s breakout hit, 2025\u2019s \u201cMaterialists\u201d ($11.3 million), and similar to Zendaya\u2019s last film, 2024\u2019s \u201cChallengers\u201d ($15 million), which appealed to similar demographics as \u201cThe Drama.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Drama\u201d also debuted overseas with $13.6 million for a global tally of $28 million. That\u2019s an encouraging worldwide opening for an original adult-oriented film, especially against its budget of around $28 million. It\u2019s a testament to the star power of Zendaya and Pattinson, who will share the screen twice more in 2026 with \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d and \u201cDune: Part Three.\u201d Directed by Kristoffer Borgli, the R-rated \u201cThe Drama\u201d follows a happily engaged couple whose wedding week goes off the rails after an unexpected revelation.<\/p>\n

\n\tEnthusiasm for \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d helped to power the biggest collective weekend of the year. Already, the box office is showing improvement from last year, with ticket sales up 23% from the same point in 2025, according to Comscore. Exhibitors are encouraged because \u201cThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u201d isn\u2019t the only movie that\u2019s bringing audiences to the big screen. That\u2019s a change from post-pandemic habits, when too often, one blockbuster would suck up all the oxygen at multiplexes and leave the rest of the new releases to settle for scraps.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[\u2018The Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u2019] is exactly the kind of broad, crowd-pleasing release that brings people into theatres,\u201d says AMC\u2019s CEO Adam Aron. \u201cJust as importantly, this success is happening alongside other films that also have been bringing in moviegoers, including \u2018Project Hail Mary,\u2019 \u2018The Drama,\u2019 \u2018Scream 7\u2019 and \u2018Hoppers\u2019 among many others. The combination of a major tentpole like \u2018The Super Mario Galaxy Movie\u2019 supported by a diverse slate helps drive consistent, sustained moviegoing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSecond place on domestic charts went to \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d which had another stellar showing with $30 million in its third outing, a 43% decline. So far, the space adventure starring Ryan Gosling has earned an impressive $217 million in North America and $420.7 million globally. It\u2019s the\u00a0first commercial hit for Amazon MGM, which has spent lavishly\u00a0in its quest to become a major player in the movie business.\u00a0It\u2019s a pivotal year for the studio, which will deliver a full theatrical slate for the first time since the e-commerce giant acquired\u00a0MGM for\u00a0$8 billion in 2022<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDisney\u2019s animated Pixar comedy \u201cHoppers\u201d landed at No. 4 with $5.8 million in its fifth weekend of release, an unsurprising 52% hit as family crowds overwhelmingly opted to watch the cinematic adventures of Mario and friends. \u201cHoppers\u201d has generated $149.6 million domestically and $332 million worldwide, a decent showing that\u2019s not quite near the box office heights of Pixar\u2019s greats.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cReminders of Him\u201d rounded out the top five with $2.3 million in its fourth frame. Universal\u2019s romantic drama, based on Colleen Hoover\u2019s novel of the same name, has grossed $45 million in North America and $79 million globally against a $25 million budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wahoo!
