Ottawa is in second place at 24 kilometres, and Toronto is in first at 32 kilometres, according to the MoneySuperMarket Commuter Carpooling Index.

MoneySuperMarket, a platform where consumers can compare prices on things like insurance, looked at 150 cities worldwide, analyzing traffic speeds, commute distances, and congestion.

This isn’t the only report that ranks Vancouver’s traffic poorly.

According to the INRIX 2025 Global Traffic Scorecard, Vancouver was the third-worst city in Canada (and one of the worst worldwide) for traffic congestion.

Another report from the TomTom Traffic Index found that Vancouver was actually the most congested city in Canada in 2025, based on comparing peak travel times to the lowest travel times.

It found that during morning rush hour, it takes 29 minutes and 33 seconds for Vancouverites to travel 10 kilometres, 64.6 per cent more time than it would if there was free-flowing traffic. The average speed was 20.3 kilometres per hour.

During evening rush hour, 10 kilometres took 35 minutes and 18 seconds, an additional six minutes from the morning and a 90.4 per cent congestion level. The average speed was 17 kilometres per hour.

And another report from Turo found that Vancouverites drove their vehicles on average 5.2 days a week, compared to the national average of five days a week, despite the city’s good reputation for transit, and TransLink has been ranked as North America’s fourth-best public transit system.

Should commuters consider carpooling?

MoneySuperMarket encourages people to consider carpooling as a way to reduce traffic congestion.

“Fewer cars on the road has the potential to reduce congestion, road traffic collisions, and lower emissions,” said Alicia Hempsted, a car insurance expert. “With drivers under mounting pressure from rising costs and longer journeys, carpooling could be a simple change that delivers real everyday benefits.”

It found that one Canadian city, Montreal, is among the top cities worldwide that could benefit from carpooling, potentially saving drivers seven minutes each way.

You might be surprised to learn that Vancouverites have one of the longest commutes in the country.
