{"id":584840,"date":"2026-04-06T01:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T01:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/584840\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T01:00:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T01:00:14","slug":"15-years-of-neglect-vancouver-park-board-calls-for-1-35-billion-to-tackle-repair-backlog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/584840\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8217;15 years of neglect&#8217;: Vancouver park board calls for $1.35 billion to tackle repair backlog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Park board commissioner Brennan Bastyovanszky is calling for a \u201chistoric investment\u201d of $1.35 billion for better parks and to address deteriorating facilities throughout Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is what 15 years of neglect looks like,\u201d he said as commissioners point to widespread repairs at pools, community centres and park infrastructure that have been deferred for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a motion going before the Vancouver park board on Tuesday, Bastyovanszky says a recent audit of the city\u2019s recreation facilities found 72 per cent were in poor or very poor condition, even as the city is expected to be home to 250,000 more residents by 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe city will have to make the difficult decision as to which assets are a priority \u2026 and which assets it will decommission,\u201d said city auditor general Mike Macdonell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bastyovanszky noted the indefinite closure of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/vancouver-aquatic-centre-closed-indefinitely-235429915.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:chunk of concrete fell from its ceiling;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;chunk of concrete fell from its ceiling&quot;}\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chunk of concrete fell from its ceiling<\/a> in early November, as a warning sign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIts closure was a prelude to what\u2019s coming \u2026 it was a canary in a coal mine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The proposal comes as the city prepares its three-year capital plan, with discussions underway between park board and city staff, along with the mayor, councillors and commissioners ahead of a June presentation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The money would be used to improve and expand on the recreational system of 240 parks and beaches, two dozen community centres, 14 aquatic facilities, 155 sports fields and eight ice rinks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Board chair Tom Digby said the final figure is not set, but said the amount reflects system-wide needs rather than taxpayer cost alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe taxpayer portion might only be a small part of that amount,\u201d said Digby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The capital investments would come from the city\u2019s real estate and facilities management department, not the park board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That department, which is responsible for maintaining and renewing park board facilities, has called for a five-year, $347 million emergency restoration fund that is part of the park board\u2019s capital plan for 2023-26. But none of that money has been spent, said Bastyovanszky. In fact, he said, the opposite happened, with the city reallocating $50 million from parks and rec during a mid-term council budget review.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\" Vancouver park commissioner Brennan Bastyovanszky\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"610\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/825727fd3956112c73a2e4234ab018f6.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Vancouver park commissioner Brennan Bastyovanszky<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The auditor general said more is needed, and said the facilities management department should work with the park board on a plan to upgrade park facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The billion-plus investment is proposed as part of the 2027-30 capital plan. No,\u201d Digby said.\u00a0 \u201cWe lost all visibility for parks and recreation, compared to sewers and other areas of infrastructure need in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For park board commissioners, the stakes are clear: without substantial new funding, they warn, residents may begin to see more closures or service reductions across Vancouver\u2019s parks and recreation network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cDo people want to see Kits Pool closed? Britannia closed?
