{"id":585007,"date":"2026-04-06T03:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T03:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/585007\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T03:00:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T03:00:16","slug":"after-repairs-b-c-ferry-lasts-40-minutes-before-breaking-down-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/585007\/","title":{"rendered":"After repairs, B.C. ferry lasts 40 minutes before breaking down again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Only a short time after it re-entered service, several sailings of the Queen of Surrey were cancelled Sunday and more sailings are at risk due to a mechanical issue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/bc-ferries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">BC Ferries<\/a> said the vessel would be out of service while <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11758745\/3-bc-ferries-vessels-out-of-service-easter-long-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">undergoing a scheduled retrofit,<\/a> as issues were found with its steering.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, BC Ferries said the vessel had re-entered service, but crews identified a mechanical issue with its steering panel early in the morning. It was pulled out of service again after only 40 minutes.\u00a0As a result, four morning sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale had been cancelled. At about 1 p.m., the agency advised that the 12:10 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. trips had also been scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>The breakdown left the company scrambling.<\/p>\n<p>A replacement vessel was brought in to provide service starting with the 2:25 p.m. sailing departing from Horseshoe Bay. It\u2019s expected this ferry would operate on the remaining trips on Sunday, but would force the cancellation of one return trip to Vancouver Island and a pair of return sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Duke Point on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Some people in cars trying to make one of the crossings told Global News they\u2019ve felt there\u2019s been a lack of communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery minimal other than coming up to the door or like the window and just kind of being like, \u2018We don\u2019t really know what\u2019s going on; if you need a refund, go and see the front office,&#8217;\u201d said Darlene Buttle Parsons, who had been waiting about 12 hours for her departure to Langdale.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won't miss a trending story.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>Get breaking Canada news delivered to your inbox as it happens so you won&#8217;t miss a trending story.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from BC Ferries said affected passengers of cancelled sailings will hear from its customer service centre, which will let people know if they can be fit on an alternate sailing or if the booking must be cancelled. It had only returned to service last Sunday after a separate breakdown during spring break.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the Coastal Celebration ferry is undergoing its annual retrofit and has been docked at Swartz Bay since March 8.<\/p>\n<p>A smaller ferry to Texada Island also suffered a breakdown Friday and Saturday, forcing BC Ferries to reroute another vessel.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>BC Ferries said in its statement the latest issues \u201cunderscore the challenges of operating an aging fleet.\u201d\u00a0It notes it applied to the BC Ferry Commissioner for a fifth New Major Vessel, but the proposal was not approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout that extra vessel, our ability to absorb disruptions like this is limited,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Diana Mumford, former chair of the Sunshine Coast Ferry Advisory Committee, says more needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProvide us ferry service that we can depend on, and not just sometimes or most of the time,\u201d Mumford said in an interview with Global News. \u201cIt is something we need all of the time and we have one breakdown after another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcferrycommission.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Office of the British Columbia Ferries Commission<\/a> approved four new major vessels for its fleet. The new vessels will replace the aging Queen of Alberni, Queen of New Westminster, Queen of Coquitlam and Queen of Cowichan \u2013 the oldest major ships still in use.<\/p>\n<p>Eric McNeely, provincial president of the BC Ferry and Marine Workers\u2019 Union, told Global News the cancellations are the result of several factors, including an aging fleet, a maintenance team under pressure, and planning that \u201chasn\u2019t kept pace with the demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur engineering crews are working as much as they can to get the vessels back into service,\u201d he said. \u201cBut as vessels get older, they require more maintenance and they require the resource to do that.
