Andr\u00e9 Lapens\u00e9e was on his way out of the Ottawa Mission<\/a> after a \u201cdelicious\u201d meal at 53 Daly St., where Ottawa\u2019s oldest \u2014 and largest \u2014 homeless shelter served 1,756 meals on Easter day. Lapens\u00e9e hadn\u2019t noticed the big blue Ottawa Mission truck (known as Truck No. 2), which was stationed just by the entrance, serving free hot chocolate to accompany the Easter meals.<\/p>\n

Lapens\u00e9e leaned against the stanchions separating the two lines.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I have one?\u201d Lapens\u00e9e asked. Hanriq Cangrre, one of two people operating the truck on Sunday, April 5, eagerly handed him a cup. It was a few minutes past noon and Cangrre had already served an estimated 200 hot chocolates.<\/p>\n

Cangrre had been hard at work all week. The Ottawa Mission\u2019s two food trucks had spent every day over the last week delivering what would total 16,109 meals to 41 Ottawa neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n

The Ottawa Mission totalled 18,302 meals served over Easter day and the week before, including 437 meals served to community partner organizations. The Easter total is a record for the organization, with the previous mark of 18,275 meals set last Christmas.<\/p>\n

Executive chef Ric Watson, the Ottawa Mission\u2019s director of food services and the founder of the Food Services Training Program for vulnerable community members, was on hand making sure everything ran smoothly and everyone got a tasty meal he and his team prepared.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis meal brings everybody together,\u201d the Chef said.<\/p>\n

Lapens\u00e9e, who spent four months at the Ottawa Mission shelter three years ago, said he turned his life around thanks to the shelter\u2019s services. He got a job and an apartment in a span of six months after leaving the Mission. But Lapens\u00e9e said he comes back to visit the Mission from time to time on holidays.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were treated better than being in a fancy restaurant,\u201d Lapens\u00e9e said. \u201cThat\u2019s how it made me feel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cry over everything,\u201d he said. \u201cSimple, happy tears.\u201d<\/p>\n

The voices that are the hardest to hear<\/p>\n

Three times a year \u2014 at Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving<\/a> \u2014 Mona Fortier, MP for Ottawa\u2014Vanier\u2014Gloucester, comes with her mother and Natalie Montpetit, a treasured colleague from her office, to serve water and juice.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I give extra,\u201d she confessed with a laugh. \u201cIt\u2019s the little things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kale Charlebois enjoyed the turkey dinner Sunday.<\/p>\n

Fortier says the smiles she gets from people fulfil her, but she also gets a renewed sense of, \u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of work to do.\u201d Fortier said she sees the Mission\u2019s work as being a heroic service to the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody gets a chance to have dignity, and I think with the meal, today is where we serve dignity,\u201d she said. \u201cEveryone is from a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Fraser echoed the same sentiments. For the Ottawa South MPP, being a politician means getting the opportunity to celebrate holidays with people whose voices \u201care hardest to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might assume that everybody here is somebody who\u2019s on the street, but they\u2019re not,\u201d he said. \u201cTimes are really hard for people and you see more people that are better clothed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Margaret Davidson was busy serving meals as one of the more than 100 volunteers at the Mission on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\"<\/p>\n

Steve Georgopoulos, a longtime volunteer with the Ottawa Mission, had a little chat with Paul Burnett, deputy chief with the Ottawa Police Service, between serving warm meals.<\/p>\n

Davidson wore white and yellow checkered bunny ears \u2014 just as she did for the past four Easters when she volunteered for the organization.<\/p>\n

Her inspiration is simply to \u201cgive something back to the community,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cSeeing everyone here just enjoying themselves and seeing them happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle Sitka, who came out for the first time to volunteer at the Mission, works at the Ottawa Paramedic Service as a community paramedic. He came after one of his colleagues, who has been volunteering for a long time, encouraged him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a nice way to be involved in the community from a different perspective,\u201d Sitka said. \u201cEveryone here is in really good spirits and everyone\u2019s at their best, caring for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sitka was assigned table No. 9 and was responsible for bringing plates of food, giving him the chance to interact a bit with people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look around and I see councillors and members of the police, and people from all different walks of life here to celebrate together and have a meal, it\u2019s nice to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018How much happier can I be?\u2019<\/p>\n

Chef Watson said the Mission started serving meals at 11 a.m. and stayed open until 5 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Mission is kind of a hub for people in need,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen everyone gets in the room, there\u2019s one big family and it\u2019s nice to see people just want to be here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to be happy. They want to eat a good meal. Everyone just wants to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watson said the Mission\u2019s food service training program<\/a>, which trains homeless and precariously housed people to work in the food service industry, started in 2004 and operates to this day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started it to help people get off social services and back into the workforce,\u201d he said. \u201cThe only requirement is a desire to want to change your life for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watson said the program has had a 90 per cent success rate, with over 400 graduates to date.<\/p>\n

For Lapens\u00e9e, it was somewhat of a dream to meet Chef Watson. Lapens\u00e9e said a woman who was sitting next to him during the meal looked up at Watson and said, \u201cCan I have a hug?\u201d And he obliged.<\/p>\n

Lapens\u00e9e recalled saying, \u201cIs that the real \u2026 Chef?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got to finally see him in person,\u201d Lapens\u00e9e said. \u201cHe\u2019s as admirable as his reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I tip my hat to him,\u201d he said, as he leaned forward with his white cap off.<\/p>\n

Milos Kljajic was helping serve meals as a volunteer Sunday.<\/p>\n

The meal was an emotional one for Lapens\u00e9e, who had just lost his mother two months ago. He tried to brush it off, but eventually accepted his happy tears. \u201cAnyone that knows me knows I\u2019m a sap.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking about my mom now,\u201d he said. \u201cHow much happier can I be?\u201d<\/p>\n
