{"id":585885,"date":"2026-04-06T13:21:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T13:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/585885\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T13:21:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T13:21:08","slug":"construction-season-is-starting-in-toronto-here-are-the-closures-you-need-to-know-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/585885\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction season is starting in Toronto, here are the closures you need to know about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What to know<\/p>\n<p>Warmer weather means more outdoor construction across the City of Toronto, with residents encouraged to check planned projects online as delays and closures increase during \u201cconstruction season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ongoing work on the Gardiner Expressway between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue continues to limit traffic to two lanes each way, with ramp closures, transit adjustments near the TTC Exhibition Loop, and a future full closure expected before all lanes reopen.<\/p>\n<p>Installation work tied to the Ontario Line near Exhibition GO will bring lane reductions, pedestrian detours, and traffic control on surrounding streets through mid-July.<\/p>\n<p>Additional localized disruptions include jet grouting near Gertrude Place, demolitions along Pape Avenue, and signal upgrades on Overlea Boulevard, with temporary sidewalk closures, lane merges, and detours for pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n<p>With warmer weather approaching, the city will have more outdoor construction underway, causing more closures and delays around Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Although the city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/services-payments\/building-construction\/infrastructure-city-construction\/understanding-city-construction\/myths-about-construction-in-the-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">does work on some construction projects in the winter<\/a>, including watermains and underground projects, the amount of construction increases outdoors as temperatures rise.<\/p>\n<p>Residents in specific wards can look into planned construction in their area using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/city-government\/data-research-maps\/neighbourhoods-communities\/ward-profiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the City of Toronto website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the more significant road closures and delays to expect during what many Toronto residents call \u201cconstruction season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dufferin Street to Strachan Avenue \u2013 The Gardiner Expressway strategic rehabilitation plan<\/p>\n<p>As the city works to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/services-payments\/streets-parking-transportation\/road-maintenance\/bridges-and-expressways\/expressways\/gardiner-expressway\/gardiner-expressway-rehabilitation-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">restore the Gardiner Expressway<\/a> in the south end of the city, they are sectioning roads beneath the highway off one by one.<\/p>\n<p>Section 2 of the project began early 2024, and continues near Dufferin Street to Strachan Avenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since 2024, the Gardiner Expressway has been reduced to two lanes in each direction between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue. This will continue as usual throughout the summer with some occasional addition lane closures.<\/p>\n<p>The eastbound on-ramp from Lake Shore Boulevard, east of Jameson Avenue, will be closed during this section to prevent traffic from merging near the construction zone.<\/p>\n<p>Shuttle buses will operate near the TTC Exhibition Loop in place of streetcars to provide continuous access to transit options for commuters.<\/p>\n<p>Some pedestrian walkway detours may be in place.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/95da-ECS-BE-01GE-GS2-email-updateoctober-24aoda.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">section is near completion<\/a>, with the city adding a full closure of the Gardiner Expressway from Spadina Avenue to Highway 427 will soon be required complete maintenance and final work prior to a safe reopening of all six lanes between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>October 2025 was the last update on the section, and the city has yet to announce a completion date.<\/p>\n<p>Manitoba Avenue and Hanna Avenue \u2013 Exhibition water service installation<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.metrolinx.com\/image\/upload\/v1775155794\/Images\/Metrolinx\/Ontario%20Line\/EX-_Water_Service_Installation_-_April_2026_V2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Installation of a water service near Exhibition GO<\/a> will cause lane closures and pedestrian detours beginning early April until around July 17.<\/p>\n<p>This is a part of the work for the future Ontario Line connected to the station.<\/p>\n<p>Lane closures on Manitoba Avenue and Hanna Avenue will be in place during the duration of construction.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers and pedestrians can expect flaggers to guide traffic and people safely around the work zone.<\/p>\n<p>Gertrude Place and Muriel Avenue \u2013 jet grouting<\/p>\n<p>The final stage of <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.metrolinx.com\/image\/upload\/v1774021146\/Images\/Metrolinx\/Ontario%20Line\/OL_Jet_Grouting_Gertude_Place_stage_3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a jet grouting plan<\/a> near Gertrude Place and Muriel Avenue will cause some delays until around early May.<\/p>\n<p>Portions of the sidewalk on these streets will be closed. Pedestrians will be expected to use the temporary sidewalks that will be sectioned off.<\/p>\n<p>An officer will also be stationed at the Gertrude Place and Muriel Avenue intersection to<\/p>\n<p>help direct traffic and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>Pape Avenue between Sammon Avenue and Aldwych Avenue \u2013 Metrolinx demolitions<\/p>\n<p>Construction for the future <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.metrolinx.com\/image\/upload\/v1775155737\/Images\/Metrolinx\/Ontario%20Line\/2026-03-30_Notice_Sammon_Demo_04.02.2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sammon Emergency Services Building and Crossover<\/a> is underway on Pape Avenue between Sammon Avenue and Aldwych Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The demolition of multiple Metrolinx properties will be underway later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Two northbound traffic lanes on Pape Avenue will be closed, and incorporate a temporary<\/p>\n<p>pedestrian walkway near the construction site. Two southbound traffic lanes will be merged to provide one lane in each direction.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic personnel will be on site to direct traffic and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>Overlea Boulevard \u2013 street lighting and traffic signal installation<\/p>\n<p>Work along <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.metrolinx.com\/image\/upload\/v1774463874\/Images\/Metrolinx\/Ontario%20Line\/OL_Construction_Notice_-Temporary_Street_Lighting_and_Traffic_Installation_Along_Overlea_Boulevard_-_UPDATED.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Overlea Boulevard<\/a> will begin after April 6, to install both street lights and traffic signals.<\/p>\n<p>Once it\u2019s begun, the construction will last about six weeks, weather permitting.<\/p>\n<p>The city did not specify what roads would be impacted but have reassured all traffic lane reductions will be returned to public use once work is completed.<\/p>\n<p>Sidewalks and crosswalks within the work zones will be closed.
