That’s how I interpreted it.

“He didn’t say anything specific, but that’s absurd.

Photo by Thomas Schreyer/VCG via Getty Images

“You win a match 3-1, you’re the dominant player, and he’s sitting there, saying, ‘I noticed today there are things Carlos does better, I have to do things differently’.

“I was like, Ok Jannik, Ok.”

Petkovic believes Sinner noted his net game as a weakness in comparison to his rival, and he may well have been right to do so.

The Italian, for as good as he is, still trails Alcaraz by some distance at the net, as the Spaniard’s volleys are a level above.

If Sinner wants to enjoy more Grand Slam success in 2025 and clinch his second consecutive title at the US Open, improving his net game must be a priority.

Who is the favorite to win the 2025 US Open?

Having won the previous three hard-court Grand Slam tournaments, it’s hard to look past Sinner winning his fourth in New York.

2024 Australian Open – Jannik Sinner2024 US Open – Jannik Sinner2025 Australian Open – Jannik Sinner

He won’t have things all his own way, however, and the chances are Alcaraz will be in contention once more.

Just as Sinner used his French Open final defeat as motivation to win the title at Wimbledon, Alcaraz will no doubt do the same at Flushing Meadows.

Alcaraz will return to the US Open with a point to prove in 2025, after suffering one of the worst Grand Slam defeats of his tennis career last time out.

Entering the tournament as the number three seed, Alcaraz lost to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round, 1-6, 5-7, 4-6.

That result, combined with their respective performances at this year’s Australian Open, further cemented Sinner’s position as the number one hard-court player on the ATP Tour.

It is, however, important to remember what happened in their one previous meeting at the US Open, when they faced off in the 2022 quarterfinals.

Winning a five-set thriller, Alcaraz saved match points against Sinner en route to his first major title.

Whilst Sinner and Alcaraz are the clear favorites, they aren’t the only players in the draw, and several other big names will likely find themselves in contention.

Over recent years, the US Open has proven itself to be the most unpredictable of the four Grand Slam events, as surprise winners aren’t all that surprising.

YearChampionSeedNotes2021Daniil Medvedev2ndOnly Grand Slam title*2020Dominic Thiem2ndOnly Grand Slam
