Steven Spielberg is returning to the science-fiction genre with this summer\u2019s \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d and he\u2019s starting his press tour by singling out another sci-fi franchise for praise. Gracing the cover of Empire magazine<\/a>, Spielberg declared Denis Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cDune\u201d films some of his favorite sci-fi movies ever made. Villeneuve has \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d (based on Frank Herbert\u2019s \u201cDune Messiah\u201d) releasing later this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecently, I\u2019ve loved the\u00a0\u2018Dune\u2019\u00a0movies. They are among my favorite science-fiction movies, not just recently, but of all time. Especially\u00a0the second film,\u201d Speilberg said. \u201cI think [Part Two] is the best movie Denis has ever made. I cannot wait to see the third one. I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll show it to me early. I\u2019m such a fan of his.\u201d<\/p>\n

The filmmaker continued, \u201cI love the [Dune] books, and I just think his tribute to the books is like Guillermo [del Toro]\u2019s tribute to Mary Shelley with Frankenstein: he honored Mary Shelley as I think Denis honored Frank Herbert.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spielberg has not kept his \u201cDune\u201d love a secret. During a\u00a0Q&A with Villeneuve<\/a>\u00a0at the Directors Guild of America shortly after \u201cDune: Part Two\u2019s\u201d theatrical release, Spielberg called the sequel \u201cone of the most brilliant science-fiction films I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me start by saying there are filmmakers who are the builders of worlds,\u201d Spielberg told Villeneuve at the time. \u201cIt\u2019s not a long list and we know who a lot of them are. Starting with [Georges] M\u00e9li\u00e8s and Disney and Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen I include in that list. Fellini built his own worlds. Tim Burton. Obviously Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro. The list goes on but it\u2019s not that long of a list, and I deeply, fervently believe that you are one of its newest members\u2026And that scene surfing the sandworms is one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever!<\/p>\n

Spielberg was one of many top directors who championed \u201cDune: Part Two\u201d upon its release. Christopher Nolan moderated an FYC conversation<\/a> with Villeneuve at the time and said: \u201cI think it\u2019s a miraculous job of adaptation, of taking that second half and making an incredible conclusion of the story\u2026 \u00a0Most adaptations, it\u2019s a process of condensing things and simplifying things. My feeling in watching both films, in particular the second film, is that this was an act of exploring a little further and burrowing into the complications and embracing those and the world building beyond even what\u2019s in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spielberg\u2019s \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d opens in theaters June 12, while Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d arrives Dec. 18.<\/p>\n
