The final show of the year for advanced acting students at the University of Winnipeg\u2019s Department of Theatre and Film sends six troublesome teenagers\u00a0into space to figure life out for themselves on a new planet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
On the surface, the premise of All the Bad Kids Go to Mars is good enough to draw audiences to the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film this weekend. \u201cIt\u2019s a very cheeky, fun play that\u2019ll be a good time if you come see it,\u201d smiles actor Michael Beaupre.<\/p>\n
However,\u00a0the play has meant so much more to these students as they use it to hone their\u00a0skills on and off the stage\u00a0as they prepare for the next chapter of their artistry.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Developing well-rounded\u00a0theatre\u00a0artists\u00a0<\/p>\n
The first thing that director Hope McIntyre notes about the play is that it is a great challenge for the actors. \u201cI think the exciting thing about the piece is because we see these characters trapped in one space, it\u00a0really becomes about character development, their journey, what they learn from each other, the conflict between these six characters,\u201d she explains.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis show is\u00a0great\u00a0experience,\u201d says Beaupre. \u201cI\u2019ll\u00a0have to draw upon this experience in the future for when I\u00a0have to\u00a0really let all the feelings from the other characters land in my character.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alongside the onstage learning comes the offstage learning\u00a0that the students have taken on for the show \u2013 the\u00a0behind-the-scenes\u00a0roles that range from marketing to set-building\u00a0to sound design\u00a0that McIntyre notes are crucial for emerging theatre artists to have experience in. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way for them to learn not only about how to be an actor, but how to self-produce, how to do a fringe show, how to be\u00a0a\u00a0teacher who might have to do everything when they\u2019re teaching drama.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Developing all these skills is a necessity for artists trying to make a career in the theatre arts as the industry constantly evolves around them. For\u00a0the university\u2019s part, McIntyre says that the faculty and instructors in the theatre department are also always learning\u00a0to ensure that they can prepare students the best they can, including in the\u00a0preparations\u00a0for this show.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEven the choice of play, we used a collaborative method where the\u00a0students\u00a0read\u00a0pieces\u00a0and we discussed\u00a0them,\u00a0and the choice was based on everyone\u2019s consent and desire to do a show,\u201d she says. \u201cI think we\u2019ve moved away from, you know, director as authoritative figure in the industry right now, and I get to be a facilitator and work collaboratively with a cast who has such amazing ideas, and I think it\u2019s about getting out of their way and allowing them to shine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

All the Bad Kids Go to Mars is being shown on April 11 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 12 at 4 p.m. at the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film. Admission is free with tickets available at the door.
