He was watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-basketball\/ncaa-releases-iconic-one-shining-moment-video-michigan-victory-2026-ncaa-tournament\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOne Shining Moment\u201d<\/a> on the Lucas Oil Stadium big screen, starring his Michigan Wolverines.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6d\">May grinned at highlights of his players doing great things, like forward Yaxel Lendeborg and center Aday Mara slamming home dunks. He quietly mouthed, \u201cOh, s&#8212;\u201d when the video montage showed his guard, Roddy Gayle Jr., roaring off the floor to dunk a missed shot. His eyes were dry but his face was beaming as a season of perfect vision reached its culmination.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">At age 49, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2023\/03\/31\/march-madness-mens-ncaa-tournament-dusty-may-fau-indiana\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the descendant of coal miners from rural Indiana<\/a> has now authored a basketball miracle and a basketball masterpiece. Taking Florida Atlantic to 35 wins and the 2023 Final Four was the miracle; building this Michigan team and winning a title is the masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">Monday night, May capped off one of the greatest single-season coaching jobs in college basketball history with a national title. He\u2019s the portal king, the team-building genius, the X\u2019s and O\u2019s boss all rolled into one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images2.minutemediacdn.com\/image\/upload\/c_crop,x_0,y_0,w_0,h_0\/c_fill,w_16,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto\/images\/voltaxMediaLibrary\/mmsport\/si\/01knm1t96gkk30w5n3bx.jpg\" alt=\"Michigan wins national championship\" title=\"Michigan wins national championship\" width=\"0\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"6t\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Erick W. Rasco\/Sports Illustrated<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">The 69\u201363 victory over UConn was an artless street fight\u2014a departure from Michigan\u2019s high-scoring sprint through the NCAA men\u2019s tournament to get to this point\u2014but the Wolverines showed their mettle and versatility by finding a way to win it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">Ugly as the final game was, it punctuated a beautiful year of player identification, development and roster building. May and his staff created an ambitious framework and then filled it in with four key transfers, four Michigan holdovers from 2024\u201325 and a freshman\u2014selfless players who wanted to do something great together.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images2.minutemediacdn.com\/image\/upload\/c_crop,x_0,y_0,w_0,h_0\/c_fill,w_16,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto\/images\/voltaxMediaLibrary\/mmsport\/si\/01knke7vv9kaag17s5kf.jpg\" alt=\"The Wolverines celebrate after winning the 2026 men\u2019s basketball title.\" title=\"The Wolverines celebrate after winning the 2026 men\u2019s basketball title.\" width=\"0\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"7a\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Wolverines celebrate after winning the 2026 men\u2019s basketball title, their first since 1989. | Erick W. Rasco\/Sports Illustrated<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7e\">\u201cWhen you bring a group this talented together and they decide from the beginning that they\u2019re going to do it this way and they never waver and they never change, that\u2019s probably the most uncommon thing in athletics now,\u201d May said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7h\">As this 37\u20133 season built into something bigger and bigger, a narrative formed that Michigan had simply money-whipped the rest of the sport in the transfer portal. But in point of fact, May identified four talented players who were not finished products\u2014three of them from power-conference schools who hadn\u2019t quite lived up to their pre-college billing. They came to Ann Arbor and got better. Much better.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7k\">\u201cWe took four guys out of the portal,\u201d May said Sunday. \u201cIf you listen to the college basketball gospel, we took 17 of them, and that\u2019s all we have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7n\">We\u2019re still relatively early in the transfer portal era. He nearly doubled his scoring (from 7.0 ppg to 13.1) year-over-year, in part because he improved his free throw accuracy 16 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"84\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-basketball\/from-obscurity-to-immortality-yaxel-lendeborg-gritty-masterpiece-seals-michigan-title\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yaxel Lendeborg was a high-energy rebounding fanatic at UAB<\/a> with questionable ability to play on the perimeter. In two seasons with the Blazers, he made 37 three-pointers while shooting 34.9% outside the arc. In one season with Michigan, Lendeborg has made 67 threes while shooting 38.3%.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"87\">Aday Mara\u2019s potential remained unrealized in two seasons at UCLA. As a sophomore in 2024\u201325, he averaged 6.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.0 assist per game. This season at Michigan his scoring nudged up, from 9.4 points to 10.3, while his turnovers dropped, from 3.1 to 2.4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-basketball\/michigan-looks-unstoppable-barreling-into-mens-hoops-title-game-against-uconn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He was at his best at the Final Four<\/a>, torching Arizona in the semifinals for 13 points, 10 assists and four steals, then providing desperately needed offense against UConn with a game-high 19 points. That earned him Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8o\">\u201cLast year I was really down on myself, a lot of people doubted me,\u201d Cadeau said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m just so proud of myself to be able to say I was the most outstanding player and win a national championship at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8r\">Cadeau was the first of the quartet that May landed, but he didn\u2019t do it without cross-checking with former Tar Heel player and current assistant coach Sean May. Rasco\/Sports Illustrated<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"95\">\u201cHe gave me all the intel and everything on the background,\u201d Dusty May said. \u201cI just said, \u2018Let me ask you one question: Would 17-, 18-year-old Sean May, who was a McDonald&#8217;s All-American, NBA player\u2014would he want to play with Elliot Cadeau?\u2019 And he said, \u2018Expletive, yeah, absolutely.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"98\">\u201cSo that was a stamp on the intangibles and whether I thought we could win this with him because on film it was there. He\u2019s a savant. He\u2019s brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-23\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9b\">As May was pulling together this remade roster, hopes were high. Then the Wolverines played poorly in two exhibition games\u2014scraping by St. John\u2019s and losing to Cincinnati\u2014and doubt began to creep in. They were going to figure out, then and there, whether the grand plan could work or needed to be scrapped.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9v\">\u201cWe did a deep dive in everything that you could come up with to try to predict whether we thought it would work,\u201d May said. \u201cOnce we left that meeting, we were more committed than ever that this is going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9y\">The big test would be the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, Nov. 24 to 26. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college-basketball\/why-michigans-stunning-destruction-of-gonzaga-should-terrify-college-basketball\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Wolverines roared through it like a juggernaut<\/a>, beating San Diego State, Auburn and Gonzaga by a combined 110 points. A loss in the Big Ten tournament title game did nothing to alter the Wolverines\u2019 standing as one of the top three teams heading into the NCAAs, along with Duke and Arizona.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-31\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"af\">Once liberated from the grind of conference play, Michigan\u2019s offense reignited. It became the first team in NCAA men\u2019s tournament history to score 90 or more points in five straight games, taking the execution up to a near-perfect degree with blowouts of Tennessee in the regional final and Arizona in the national semifinals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-32\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ai\">All the Wolverines had left to do was beat UConn to win their first national championship since 1989, and the Big Ten\u2019s first since 2000. But the hardest thing to do in the tournament the last four seasons has been beating UConn. But Hurley, winner of 18 of his last 19 NCAA tournament games, had a team that would not submit easily.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-36\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ba\">The game was an unsightly mess, which is what the underdog Huskies needed to hang around. The shooting was horrendous: Michigan\u2019s 13.3% three-point shooting was the fourth-worst in title-game history; UConn\u2019s 30.9% overall shooting ranks just outside the bottom five in title-game annals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-37\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bd\">There was no shortage of effort, just a mass shortage of offensive execution. A pileup of possessions early in the second half included Michigan blocking a UConn shot, then altering a follow shot, which led to Mara holding the ball at midcourt as three Huskies swatted at it (and him). Teammates were open all over the court, but Mara couldn\u2019t find them as he was being besieged.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-38\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bg\">UConn was in foul trouble. UConn couldn\u2019t shoot. UConn never led in the final 25 minutes. That\u2019s just how hard we just played to hold that team to 38% from the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-42\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c0\">Michigan powered through this slog with star Lendeborg clearly limited by a knee injury suffered against Arizona. He was tentative and ineffective through the first half, telling TBS at halftime that he felt \u201cawful.\u201d But Lendeborg cobbled together enough plays to finish with 13 points, making all five of his free throws. (If you want to know where Michigan won the game, look at its 25-of-28 foul shooting.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-43\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c3\">\u201cWe had to dig deep,\u201d Lendeborg said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-44\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"c6\">Afterward, as Lendeborg stood on the court waiting to cut down his piece of championship net, his mother, Yissel Raposo, leaned her head affectionately on his back.
