White Rock curling club hosts successful Nifty Fifty bonspiel<\/p>\n

Nearly 130 curlers from across the province travelled to a White Rock curling club for an annual bonspiel that has been happening for nearly six decades.<\/p>\n
Peace Arch Curling Club hosted 128 curlers from B.C. at the 57th Annual Nifty Fifty Senior Ladies Bonspiel, which was held March 23\u201326.<\/p>\n
With this year\u2019s theme being \u2018Rock Stars,\u2019 White Rock Mayor Megan Knight was on hand for the throwing of the ceremonial opening rock, while South Surrey-White Rock MP Ernie Klassen and Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford sent their regards and best wishes to all of the competitors.<\/p>\n
Shiela Dale, originally from White Rock and now living in Qualicum Beach, has participated in this bonspiel for 28 years and was proud to deliver the first rock, bonspiel committee chair Martha McArthur noted in an email.<\/p>\n
Cathy Stewart of Kelowna and Pat Elliott of South Surrey \u2014 both with 27 years of bonspiel participation \u2014 efficiently swept the rock right into the house.<\/p>\n
Over the four days of competition, every team played five games, McArthur said.<\/p>\n
Going undefeated was the Thomas Rink from Nanaimo, which won the A event.<\/p>\n
A Peace Arch team placed second in the A event: skip Judy Skinner, third McArthur, second Fay Kuntsman, and lead Pat Elliott.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile everyone enjoys the competition, it is really about the friendships and love of curling,\u201d McArthur said. \u201cOver my 20 years of curling in this event, I have been fortunate to travel around our beautiful province from Williams Lake and Quesnel, through Kamloops and Salmon Arm, to the Lower Mainland, and across to Parksville and Nanaimo on the Island.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have made many friends along the way, friends who I only see once a year at the Nifty Fifty and greet with a warm hug. I am already looking forward to next year\u2019s bonspiel in Esquimalt.\u201d<\/p>\n
McArthur shared that new members are always welcome at Peace Arch Curling Centre.<\/p>\n
