{"id":588939,"date":"2026-04-07T22:34:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/588939\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T22:34:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:34:26","slug":"ottawa-in-talks-with-all-provinces-to-cut-gst-on-new-homes-minister-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/588939\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa in talks with \u2018all provinces\u2019 to cut GST on new homes: minister &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A week after the federal and Ontario governments announced they would <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11744625\/new-home-hst-ford-government-one-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cut the HST for new homes bought in Ontario for a year<\/a>, the federal <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/housing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">housing<\/a> minister said he is in talks to expand the initiative.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in discussions with all of the provinces and territories about taking down the GST for one year on new home purchases,\u201d Housing Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/gregor-robertson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gregor Robertson<\/a> said in an interview with Global News.<\/p>\n<p>The minister did not provide a timeline as to when agreements with other provinces may be announced, but emphasized that provincial governments will be expected to put up their own money or bring forward new legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does take some negotiating. We\u2019re certainly seeing layoffs in the building sector in (Toronto and Vancouver),\u201d Robertson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe construction jobs unfortunately will be impacted in the next year or two, so you know we\u2019re going to see a ripple effect here.
