{"id":589407,"date":"2026-04-08T03:31:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T03:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/589407\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T03:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T03:31:09","slug":"brampton-mississauga-mayors-slam-provinces-plan-to-consolidate-conservation-authorities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/589407\/","title":{"rendered":"Brampton, Mississauga mayors slam province&#8217;s plan to consolidate conservation authorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The mayors of Mississauga and Brampton are pushing back against the province&#8217;s plan to consolidate its 36 conservation authorities into nine, saying the move &#8220;poses significant and immediate risks to three of Ontario&#8217;s largest and most economically critical cities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a letter sent to Environment Minister Todd McCarthy last week, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown and Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish said they condemn the proposed amalgamation of the Credit Valley Conservation Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The stability, safety and efficiency of our local watershed management system are too important to jeopardize,&#8221; they wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Any move that threatens to weaken or disrupt the high-performing services our residents and businesses rely on demands our direct and urgent intervention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a statement, a spokesperson for McCarthy said that the province&#8217;s new framework will continue to provide the same services that are happening currently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Their mandate, and service areas will remain unchanged,&#8221; Alexandru Cioban said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Cioban went on to say that the province&#8217;s plan will &#8220;reduce duplication, direct more resources to frontline work, and modernize permitting processes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ontario&#8217;s environment minister previously said the province listened to feedback after several town halls and 14,000 comments on its plan, which initially proposed having seven conservation authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">McCarthy had said the new authorities will operate under the newly created Ontario Provincial Conservation Agency and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/ottawa\/conservation-authority-managers-cautiously-optimistic-9.7123479\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:be operational by 2027;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;be operational by 2027&quot;}\" class=\"link \">be operational by 2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the letter, meanwhile, the Peel mayors say the changes could slow housing approvals and &#8220;reduce certainty&#8221; for builders, as well as possibly disrupt floodplain mapping or flood forecasting.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner is pictured during a debate between Ontario's major party leaders, in Toronto, on Feb. 17, 2025.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"641\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/99b147f0a7481242c78d5827036650a1.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner is pictured during a debate between Ontario&#8217;s major party leaders in Toronto on Feb. 17, 2025.
