{"id":589604,"date":"2026-04-08T05:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T05:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/589604\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T05:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T05:39:09","slug":"toronto-could-ban-jet-skis-entirely-from-city-owned-docks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/589604\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto could ban jet skis entirely from City-owned docks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto&#8217;s\u00a0waterfront is constantly evolving \u2014 from an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogto.com\/travel\/2026\/03\/toronto-island-airport-expansion-jet-blast-walls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">airport runway expansion<\/a> to an upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogto.com\/travel\/2026\/03\/cruise-ship-terminal-torontos-waterfront\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cruise ship terminal<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and now, there&#8217;s a new plan on the table that could reshape how people use the water itself.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/legdocs\/mmis\/2026\/ie\/bgrd\/backgroundfile-285084.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">motion<\/a> from City Councillor Dianne Saxe (Ward 11, University-Rosedale) is calling on staff to look into banning jet skis and other high-polluting personal watercrafts from City-owned properties.<\/p>\n<p>That could mean fewer opportunities to recreate high-speed chase scenes on the harbour like it&#8217;s a James Bond movie \u2014\u00a0or a Mariah Carey music video.<\/p>\n<p>Saxe&#8217;s proposal comes after the City&#8217;s General Government Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.toronto.ca\/council\/agenda-item.do?item=2026.IE28.12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recommended approval<\/a> of 20-year lease renewals for 24 waterfront boat clubs, under one condition: no more jet ski rentals on those sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But during discussions, it became clear that many clubs actually wouldn&#8217;t mind going even further and extending the ban to privately-owned jet skis too.<\/p>\n<p>Privately owned jet skis have reportedly played a significant role in ongoing conflicts at some clubs \u2014 including issues tied to the Humber Yacht Club, which ultimately didn&#8217;t have its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/legdocs\/mmis\/2026\/gg\/bgrd\/backgroundfile-284601.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lease renewed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the noise (and occasional side-eye from chill kayakers), there are environmental concerns to factor in.\u00a0Jet skis and older two-stroke engines are &#8220;well known to pump petroleum products into the water in which they operate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More marina drama: City staff admitted they haven&#8217;t actually done a full study or public consultation on the pollution side of things just yet.<\/p>\n<p>There are cleaner alternatives out there, including electric boat engines that are basically the EVs of the lake, but they&#8217;d require installing charging stations at marinas and clubs to\u00a0take off.<\/p>\n<p>Saxe&#8217;s\u00a0motion asks staff to work with groups like the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and Toronto Hydro to study the issue and report back by 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now, nothing is set in stone. But if the plan moves forward, Toronto&#8217;s waterfront could be heading toward a future with less annoyingly loud revving engines and more peaceful sounds of waves crashing and birds flying.
