<\/p>\nA business that’s sold Jamaican patties at one of Toronto’s busiest transit hubs has officially closed its doors after decades.<\/p>\n
Jamaican patties sold at convenience stores and bakeries in Toronto subway stations have been saving commuters from their end-of-day hanger attacks since time immemorial (or, at least as long as said businesses have been open).<\/p>\n
They are, perhaps, one of the city’s most defining culinary features: New York City has bagel stands, and we have subway patties.<\/p>\n
From Kipling to Kennedy, you can find these flaky, spicy delights steaming under heat lamps at businesses like Gateway and Bakery on the Go, and, in the case of Eglinton Station, commuters have had two options for the better part of two decades.<\/p>\n
Inside the station, which boasts a retail lineup that dwarfs that at virtually any other station, passengers can get patties at Gateway. For those catching a connection, it’s been all about the seemingly nameless snack shop in the bus bay.<\/p>\n
A fixture of the bus bay ever since it opened in 2004, the business was a staple for students and workers alike thanks to its prime location that allowed travellers to pick up a patty while still keeping an eye on incoming buses.<\/p>\n
Better yet, the still-warm patties often acted as de facto hand warmers while you waited for your bus in the dead of winter.<\/p>\n
Eglinton Station frequenters will have to get their snacks inside the station from now on, though, as the longstanding business has officially closed its doors, merely leaving behind a paper sign advertising a closing sale taped to the door.<\/p>\n

Eglinton Station\u00a0isn’t the only TTC bus terminal\u00a0patty shop to close its doors in recent years. In late 2024, in anticipation of a station-wide revitalization<\/a>, Warden Station’s\u00a0much-loved bus terminal\u00a0Bakery on the Go location<\/a> shuttered, too.<\/p>\n While there may still be a future for Warden Station patties when the station’s facelift is complete, whether the same can be said for the bus terminal patty shop at Eglinton Station is unclear.<\/p>\n As of now, the naked, vacant retail space doesn’t look too promising, but who knows?\u00a0Maybe with an influx of new riders passing through the station, thanks to the opening of Line 5<\/a>, it’ll also welcome in some burgeoning new businesses. Preferably those which sell spicy beef patties.<\/p>\n
