Toronto has dropped six straight games, sits at 4-7, and already finds itself chasing in the American League East. But as Arash Madani explained on The SportsCage, the bigger concern isn\u2019t the standings, it\u2019s everything happening beneath the surface.<\/p>\n
Madani says that the Blue Jays\u2019 biggest issue right now is availability.<\/p>\n
Starting pitcher Cody Ponce is expected to miss around six months following knee surgery, while catcher Alejandro Kirk is sidelined for at least six weeks with a broken hand. Outfielder Addison Barger has also landed on the injured list, adding to a growing list of unavailable contributors.<\/p>\n
And then there\u2019s Max Scherzer. The future Hall of Famer exited his most recent start after just 36 pitches due to forearm discomfort, a red flag for any pitcher, especially one entering his age-42 season.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo things you never want to hear with pitchers: elbow and forearm,\u201d Madani said. \u201cHe may be back, but for how long?\u201d<\/p>\n
With four other starters already on the injured list, Toronto\u2019s rotation is being stretched thin. Madani emphasized that the priority right now isn\u2019t dominance, it\u2019s simply finding arms that can \u201ceat innings\u201d and stabilize games.<\/p>\n
To make matters worse, if there\u2019s one injury Madani believes could derail the Jays most, it\u2019s Kirk\u2019s.<\/p>\n
The drop-off from a starting-calibre catcher to a backup is significant, and Toronto is now relying on Tyler Heineman in an everyday role, something Madani questioned.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a difference between an everyday catcher and a backup catcher. Now you\u2019re asking a guy to do something he\u2019s not built to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
The mental toll is already showing. Following a pair of defensive miscues, Heineman was reportedly emotional in the clubhouse, not exactly the confidence boost a pitching staff needs when it\u2019s already in flux.<\/p>\n
Madani also pointed to a larger organizational issue: the Blue Jays\u2019 front office has historically undervalued the catcher position, despite its importance in managing inexperienced or patchwork pitching staffs.<\/p>\n
Even before the injuries, there were questions about Toronto\u2019s lineup. The departure of Bo Bichette left a hole in the infield, and the team is now relying on several players without long-term MLB track records to carry the offence.<\/p>\n
Names like Davis Schneider, Ernie Clement, and others have shown flashes, but consistency remains a question. Meanwhile, veterans like George Springer come with durability concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey made a lot of assumptions,\u201d Madani said. \u201cYou\u2019re asking a lot of guys without a sizable track record.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the rough start, Madani stopped short of sounding the alarm on Toronto\u2019s record.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s April, there\u2019s 150 games to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
But the underlying issues, injuries, lack of depth at key positions, and offensive uncertainty are harder to ignore. For now, the Blue Jays may simply have to survive.<\/p>\n
With limited trade options early in the season and a roster already stretched thin, Toronto appears \u201cstuck with what they have\u201d in the short term.
