(Photo: Peel Regional Police X)<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Peel Regional Police brass this week to talk about Ottawa\u2019s latest efforts to help law enforcement in Mississauga, Brampton and across the country battle various violent criminal networks that endanger communities.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said in a post to social media the federal government is equipping Canadian police forces \u201cwith the tools they need to disrupt criminal networks, fight extortion and keep our communities safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Liberal government\u2019s Bill C-22, introduced last month, proposes new rules around lawful access and is intended to help police forces and security services organizations, such as the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, more effectively and quickly identify and track those who may be using tools like social media or artificial intelligence technology to commit crimes \u2014 in many cases, violent crimes that cause serious injury and death.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, reforms called for in the proposed legislation will bring Canada\u2019s laws in the area of lawful access up to date and into the new century, government representatives and police said earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Peel police Chief Nishan Duraiappah was among high-ranking members of the force to welcome the Prime Minister on Tuesday to the Peel police Community Safety Operations Centre in Brampton.<\/p>\n<p>Duraiappah said he and Carney, in addition to others in attendance, discussed the work police officers in Peel are doing to fight crimes such as extortion, home invasions, auto theft and other illegal and violent criminal behaviour that\u2019s been on the rise in recent years.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re equipping Canadian law enforcement, like the Peel Regional Police, with the tools they need to disrupt criminal networks, fight extortion, and keep our communities safe. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xNr9elbvZT\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/xNr9elbvZT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark Carney (@MarkJCarney) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarkJCarney\/status\/2041942691282301045?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 8, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the media at Peel police headquarters in Mississauga in mid-March, Duraiappah said Bill C-22 is \u201cmulti-faceted \u2026 and compels the system to operate in a far quicker manner\u201d so law enforcement agencies can zero in on and bring criminals to justice before they\u2019re allowed to cause more harm.<\/p>\n<p>What it boils down to, Peel\u2019s highest-ranking police officer said at the time, is that the new legislation will help his troops \u2014 and police across Canada \u2014 catch violent criminals and keep people safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis impacts every (crime) issue we see here in Peel,\u201d Duraiappah added.<\/p>\n<p>He said reforms in the new lawful access bill will also better equip Peel police to fight such serious crimes as human trafficking, online child exploitation, hate crime and extortion among others.<\/p>\n<p>The police chief noted old legislation, to which police have been bound, came to be in a \u201cpre-digital world\u201d and \u201ccriminals have been taking advantage of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ability to operate in a digital world is crucial,\u201d Duraiappah said.<\/p>\n<p>Government officials say the proposed legislation balances the needs of law enforcement with the privacy and rights of Canadians, and that its intent is to keep people safe \u201cin the online space\u201d and \u201ccatch criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Honoured to welcome the Rt.
