{"id":591228,"date":"2026-04-08T23:06:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T23:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/591228\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T23:06:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T23:06:22","slug":"90-year-old-smashes-dead-hang-record-heres-why-this-simple-move-matters-for-your-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/591228\/","title":{"rendered":"90-year-old smashes dead hang record \u2013 here&#8217;s why this simple move matters for your health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Last month, 90-year-old Ann Crile Esselstyn, from the USA, became the oldest woman to hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a61737382\/dead-hang\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a61737382\/dead-hang\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"dead hang\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dead hang<\/a> with an incredibly impressive time of 2:52 \u2013 defeating the previous world record held by fellow American Annie Judis, who achieved 2:01 while aged 80. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018It was new for me to be going for a record and to be celebrated in this way, since I have spent my life cheering for our four children and 10 grandchildren in their varied athletic events and achievements,\u2019 Ann told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/news\/2026\/3\/determined-90-year-old-grandma-breaks-record-for-oldest-woman-to-hold-a-dead-hang\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/news\/2026\/3\/determined-90-year-old-grandma-breaks-record-for-oldest-woman-to-hold-a-dead-hang\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Guinness World Records\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guinness World Records<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Ann&#8217;s training<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While Ann has always been active and participated in multiple sports, she explained that it was only relatively recently that she had discovered dead hangs, and the benefits of doing them regularly. According to GWR, Ann began her fitness journey last year when her daughter-in-law challenged her to try something new for 40 days. Feeling guilty about rarely using her Peloton bike, Ann decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a42721567\/benefits-of-cycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a42721567\/benefits-of-cycling\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cycle\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cycle<\/a> every morning before breakfast. After 40 days, that daily fitness habit had extended to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/yoga\/a701926\/yoga-for-beginners-how-does-yoga-actually-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/yoga\/a701926\/yoga-for-beginners-how-does-yoga-actually-work\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"yoga\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">yoga<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"running\" data-node-id=\"14.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">running<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65528257\/82-year-old-strength-training-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a65528257\/82-year-old-strength-training-transformation\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lifting weights\" data-node-id=\"14.7\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lifting weights<\/a>. During this time, Ann told GWR, she also started hanging from a bar to improve her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a60368308\/posture-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/a60368308\/posture-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"posture\" data-node-id=\"14.9\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posture<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">After her son discovered that Ann could already hang for 1:15, he challenged her to try to beat Annie\u2019s record. \u2018Because I was able to hang for 1:15 without much training, it didn\u2019t sound impossible,\u2019 Ann said. To begin with, she broke the two minutes into smaller chunks, building her strength gradually. \u2018As the month went on, I could feel my hands starting to get stronger. The blisters that hurt so much at first turned to callouses; my back was feeling a little better,\u2019 Ann told GWR.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Before long, Ann broke the record during training before doing so officially last month. \u2018Maybe if I had known I was so close [to three minutes], I might have held on just a little longer.
