{"id":591487,"date":"2026-04-09T01:48:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T01:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/591487\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T01:48:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T01:48:12","slug":"were-struggling-remains-of-missing-first-nations-woman-found-in-winnipeg-winnipeg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/591487\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We\u2019re struggling:\u2019 Remains of missing First Nations woman found in Winnipeg &#8211; Winnipeg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Winnipeg police say DNA tests have confirmed the death of a First Nations woman who disappeared more than two years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Police said Wednesday the tests determined that partial remains found near a back lane in the city\u2019s North End neighbourhood in November are of Leah Keeper.<\/p>\n<p>Keeper was 32 years old when she was reported missing in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, investigators considered the death as \u201csuspicious\u201d and the homicide unit took over. The force still considers Keeper\u2019s death suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur thoughts are with Leah\u2019s family and loved ones as well as the Indigenous community,\u201d the police service said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChief Gene Bowers is in the process of reaching out to community leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The force requested assistance from the public last month in helping locate Keeper. Police said that just months before her disappearance, she was seen in the same neighbourhood where her remains were eventually found.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Marilyn Courchene, Keeper\u2019s aunt, said police told Keeper\u2019s mother on Tuesday about the discovery, and says a lot of questions remain.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you'll never miss the day's top stories.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get daily Canada news delivered to your inbox so you&#8217;ll never miss the day&#8217;s top stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has happened within those three years?\u201d Courchene told reporters at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Leah\u2019s remains there all those three years? I don\u2019t have any answers and (Winnipeg police) are not giving us any answers as to what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keeper struggled with addiction, but Courchene said she thrived in doing land-based healing in the community of Sagkeeng First Nation, north of Winnipeg, where some of Keeper\u2019s family lives.<\/p>\n<p>She eventually returned to the city for medical reasons and that\u2019s where she disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Courchene said her niece would keep in contact with family members, and after months of not hearing from her, the family decided to report her missing.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Crime<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The family relied on community groups to help search for Keeper by visiting encampments and putting up missing person\u2019s posters.<\/p>\n<p>Courchene described Keeper as a bubbly person who had a \u201csqueaky little laugh\u201d and cared for her two daughters.<\/p>\n<p>She said police have been speaking with Keeper\u2019s mother throughout the investigation, but that little information has been provided.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re caught in between the Winnipeg police and we\u2019re caught in between whoever did this to her. And as a family, we\u2019re struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Keeper spent a lot of her time in Winnipeg, but Sagkeeng Chief E.J.
