The long holiday during the Songkran festival may ease pressure on Thailand’s oil reserves, as demand for diesel is expected to decrease during this period, says the Department of Energy Business.<\/p>\n
Domestic demand for diesel in the transport and industrial sectors stood at 75-77 million litres a day before the Israel\u2013US conflict with Iran broke out on Feb 28.<\/p>\n
To prevent an oil shortage, the government instructed six oil refineries to operate at full capacity, producing 84-85 million litres of diesel per day. Exports of diesel and other refined oil products have also been suspended, except for shipments to Laos and Myanmar.<\/p>\n
“This means we have a surplus of diesel,” said Sarawut Kaewtathip, director-general of the Department of Energy Business.<\/p>\n
Diesel reserves should have further increased on Chakri Memorial Day, marked on April 6, which fell during a three-day holiday break last weekend and the Songkran festival, when state agencies and companies close from April 11-15.<\/p>\n
“We do not yet know how much diesel reserves will increase, but this helps relieve concerns over oil scarcity,” a source said.<\/p>\n
Thailand currently has oil reserves, including crude and refined oil, covering 106 days of usage.<\/p>\n
Some crude oil has already been stored in Thailand, while additional supplies are being shipped to the country or purchased under contracts.<\/p>\n
Additional crude oil was delivered to an oil refinery of Bangchak Sriracha Plc, a subsidiary of Bangchak Corporation, in Chonburi’s Si Racha district on April 7.<\/p>\n
“The vessel carrying 700,000 barrels of oil safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz en route to Thailand,” said Chaiwat Kovavisarach, group chief executive and president of Bangchak.<\/p>\n
The oil is now undergoing the refining process to support the continuous production of refined oil for consumers.<\/p>\n
The company currently has crude oil reserves covering two months of production, said Mr Chaiwat.<\/p>\n
