Speaking about his role with the team since returning to the bench, Coffey is denying talk that they don’t see eye to eye.

When Coffey returned, there was chatter that it might signal Knoblauch was on the hot seat. If Coffey was being brought back, but these two didn’t have the greatest working relationship when he left the first time, what did that mean? If they didn’t get along, the Oilers weren’t possibly going to force them to work together, were they?

Fast forward a few weeks and the Oilers have turned things around from how badly they were struggling before Coffey returned. The last few games haven’t been stellar for the Oilers, but prior to a 6-5 loss to Utah on Tuesday, Edmonton had significantly cut down its goals against. There was no talk of friction between Coffey and Knoblauch, with Knoblauch publicly saying he was happy to have Coffey back and that the two had spoken several times, even when Coffey had stepped away.

“Facts are facts, we work well together,” said Coffey. He added, “You know, I mean, I’m sometimes speak my mind sometimes but that’s just me. I like to win. But Kris has been great. I’m here for him. I want him to do well, he’s a young guy with a great family, with a great coaching resume going forward, and I like the Oilers.”

Does this mean that Knoblauch is safe if the Oilers fizzle out in the first round, or worse yet, fail to make the playoffs (they haven’t clinched yet). No, he could be in trouble, and the odds that someone like Coffey takes over would be strong. But if the Oilers keep winning and can find a way to make another long playoff run, the chances are that Coffey and Knoblauch will keep working together and be happy to do so.

Next: Pelley Fails to Justify Maple Leafs’ Polarizing Search Firm Choice

Discover more from NHL Trade Talk

Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email.

Edmonton Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey is squashing rumors that he doesn’t have the greatest relationship with head…

[433
49,48,23987,448,36672,82
0":"post-591996","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nhl","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-kris-knoblauch","11":"tag-nhl","12":"tag-paul-coffey","13":"tag-sports
["GET
