\n The European Union and Canada have taken the next steps in deepening their partnership in research and innovation following the second Joint Committee meeting under Horizon Europe<\/p>\n

Held in Brussels, the Joint Committee meeting marked another important step in strengthening collaboration, following Canada\u2019s formal association with Horizon Europe\u2019s Pillar II in 2024.<\/p>\n

Continuing to strengthen the partnership<\/p>\n

The Joint Committee meeting was co-chaired by Marie-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne L\u00e9gar\u00e9, Director General of the Science and Research Sector at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and Joanna Drake, Deputy Director General at the European Commission\u2019s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n

Discussions focused on reviewing progress made under the association agreement and identifying opportunities to deepen cooperation. Both sides expressed satisfaction with how the partnership has evolved over the past two years, highlighting the steady increase in Canadian participation across Horizon Europe initiatives.<\/p>\n

Expanding research opportunities<\/p>\n

During the Joint Committee meeting, one of the main focuses was ensuring reciprocal access to research and innovation programs. This includes enabling European researchers to engage more closely with Canadian initiatives<\/a> while Canadian scientists continue to benefit from Horizon Europe funding and collaboration networks.<\/p>\n

Participants also examined the financial contribution mechanism that supports Canada\u2019s involvement in the programme. This mechanism ensures balanced participation and helps sustain long-term collaboration between the two partners.<\/p>\n

In addition, discussions touched on expanding Canadian participation in activities led by the European Commission\u2019s Joint Research Centre. These initiatives provide valuable platforms for knowledge exchange and policy-relevant research, further strengthening ties between the two regions.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead to future programs<\/p>\n

The Joint Committee meeting also provided an opportunity to review upcoming developments, including the Horizon Europe Work Programme for 2026-2027. Both the EU and Canada expressed optimism about future calls for proposals and the potential for increased collaboration in emerging research areas.<\/p>\n

Attention was also given to the next major EU research framework programme, currently expected to launch in 2028. Early discussions suggest that Canada and the EU are keen to build on their existing partnership and explore new ways to collaborate in the next phase of international research funding.<\/p>\n
