The adults have had previous stays in the Central Selkirk Caribou Maternity Pen, while the two calves were born there last year.

READ: Feds sued as Wildsight calls for protection of Columbia Mountain caribou range

Involved in gathering this year’s maternity pen caribou were three helicopters, three trucks and 38 personnel spanning ALCS volunteers, wildlife biologists and veterinarians, provincial government staff, members of the Sinixt Confederacy and Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, and local stakeholders.

After the caribou arrived to the pen March 27, veterinarians collected health samples and other data to gauge how many of the cows are pregnant.

This year, however, the organizers were in for a special surprise from nature.

On March 23, well before capture operations started, four adult male and two adult female caribou descended from higher elevations in the Selkirk Mountains right to the vicinity of the pen. The manager, surprised by their visit, opened the gate and put out feed.

“By early afternoon, the six animals made their way into the pen,” ALCS wrote. “This is the first time caribou have moved unaided from their late winter range to the maternity pen.”

Above all, the pen ensures pregnant cows have safe refuge from predators such as wolverines, cougars, wolves and grizzlies during calving season, when they’re most vulnerable in the wild.

This also gives calves higher chances of survival, while providing the caribou with a high-nutrition diet that improves their health and body condition for making it through harsh winters. Each year, that depends on volunteers collecting roughly 300 kilograms of arboreal lichen around Revelstoke and Nakusp to sustain the animals.

These caribou will remain in the pen for calving through May and June, until the internal temperature and other factors prompt their release back into the Selkirks sometime in late July.

Disturbance around the pen will be minimized over the coming months by limiting traffic farther up Kuskanax Forest Service Road, which runs off Hot Springs Road.

READ: Threatfuli: Meet Revelstoke’s internationally acclaimed butterfly guy

According to the provincial government, the Central Selkirks herd was previously split into the Nakusp and Duncan subpopulations. When the Duncan herd became extirpated in 2016, the Nakusp herd became all that was left. As of 2023, it’s estimated to have between 25 and 27 caribou.

With other nearby herds such as the Purcells South and South Selkirks also extirpated in the last decade, the Central Selkirks is now the southernmost surviving group of southern mountain caribou in North America.

Last year, the Village of Nakusp designated three parcels of land covering 90 hectares to the Municipal Protected Areas Project and Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database. This consists of 70 ha near Nakusp Hot Springs, 14 ha in the Upper Brouse area around Wilson Lake Road, and six hectares at Bird Island.

This March 25, the village posted that it’s excited to take part in this conservation initiative to protect more habitat in perpetuity for at-risk species, such as grizzlies, wolverines, whitebark pine and southern mountain caribou.

To learn more about ALCS’s work with local caribou, visit arrowlakescaribousociety.com.

Caribou arrive on their own to Nakusp maternity pen in first for program Published 1:22 pm Tuesday, April…

[26
49,48,66,323
0":"post-592654","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wildlife","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-science","11":"tag-wildlife
["GET
