Whitley would go on to play college ball at the University of New Brunswick, before starting with the NBA\u2019s Dallas Mavericks in 2001.<\/p>\n
He would move from their marketing department to the basketball operations department, eventually becoming a special advisor to owner Mark Cuban.<\/p>\n
Whitley would be part of the team\u2019s 2011 NBA Championship team.<\/p>\n

Everybody on that team was special. When you\u2019re around greatness every single day from ownership to players to our coaches, it\u2019s a pinch me moment really.\u201d<\/p>\n He says working with someone like Cuban shows you there is no substitute for hard work.<\/p>\n https:\/\/media-cdn.socastsrm.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1977\/files\/2026\/04\/al-whitley-4.mp3<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s really a profession where you can\u2019t hide and the amount of work and attention to detail, learning some incredible things from Mark Cuban along that way but just the attention to detail. I classify him, he\u2019s a blue-collar billionaire. He\u2019s still grinding every day, you know, his work ethic is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2017, Whitley would become the General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations for the Texas Legends, the primary development team for the Mavs.<\/p>\n Fast forward to this past November, when Whitley returned to Canada to become the CEO of the Brampton Honey Badgers (Canadian Elite Basketball League), with the goal of creating a championship team.<\/p>\n Whitley says he is happy to get back close to the Bay of Quinte region.<\/p>\n \u201cSo coming back up here, I didn\u2019t spend a lot of time in Belleville until recently taking this job and being able to go see my dad and some friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n Along with his father, he has aunts, uncles, a step-mother, cousins, and friends in Belleville and Quinte West.<\/p>\n Whitley says the CEBL, with the exception of the NBA, is the best basketball played north of the border.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/al-whitley-2.jpg\")
