{"id":592748,"date":"2026-04-09T15:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T15:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/592748\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T15:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T15:38:11","slug":"more-sea-ice-moving-southward-but-late-developing-ice-thinner-than-usual","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/592748\/","title":{"rendered":"More Sea Ice Moving Southward, but Late Developing Ice Thinner Than Usual"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/sea-ice-off-twillingate-2019.jpg\" class=\"header-image\" alt=\"More Sea Ice Moving Southward, but Late Developing Ice Thinner Than Usual\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea ice off Twillingate, 2019  (VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>Environment Canada says there may be more winter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/ice-forecasts-observations\/latest-conditions.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ice off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador<\/a>, but it\u2019s expected to dissipate sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Senior meteorologist with the Canadian Ice Service, George Karaganis says the early part of the winter was warmer than normal over Baffin Island and Labrador.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/february-warmer-ec.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-296208\" class=\"size-full wp-image-296208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/february-warmer-ec.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-296208\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">February was significantly warmer than normal over Southern Labrador and northern Newfoundland according to Environment Canada<\/p>\n<p>He says it was 5 to 6 degrees warmer than normal off Baffin Island, causing a delay of a month and half in the formation of sea ice. \u201cThat\u2019s meant that ice has been significantly lower than normal in January, in February and then March, right to the middle and end of March.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s similar to the pattern seen over the last few years says Karaganis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cold-march.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-296209\" class=\"size-full wp-image-296209\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cold-march.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-296209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cold temperatures arrived finally in March according Environment Canada.
