It belongs to the people, to history, and to those who served,\u201d said Shawn Nault, Minister of Red River M\u00e9tis Veterans.<\/p>\n<p>Vimy Ridge Day is marked every April 9, recognizing the 1917 battle often seen as a defining moment for Canada in the First World War. But that victory came at a cost, as roughly 3,600 Canadians were killed, and thousands more were wounded.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Image-12-1024x575.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-579459\"  \/>World War I memorial. Behind every name a life, much like those honored here today,\u201d said Gail Conrad Davey, provincial first vice-president, Royal Canadian Legion, Manitoba.<\/p>\n<p>The statue itself dates back more than a century, built in 1923 by the Bank of Montreal to honour 231 of its employees who died in the war, and it\u2019s modeled after a real Winnipeg soldier. The Manitoba M\u00e9tis Federation (MMF) helped lead Thursday\u2019s ceremony, recognizing the contributions and sacrifices of Red River M\u00e9tis veterans and all Indigenous people who served.<\/p>\n<p>They say remembrance matters, especially for those who never made it home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Image-14-1-1024x575.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-579458\"  \/>Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham at the unveiling of the new location of a World War I memorial.
