href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/corporate\/mandate\/acts-regulations\/forward-regulatory-plan\/list\/steamline-study-work-authorizations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">proposed<\/a>\u00a0by Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC) this month, would allow international students and graduates\u00a0waiting for study permit extensions and decisions on PGWP applications\u00a0to work without permits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They would also remove the co-op work permit requirement for\u00a0certain international apprentices and\u00a0international students taking part in work placements,\u00a0meaning their study permit would alone authorise them to study and work as part of their program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>IRCC has said the move would\u00a0streamline the visa system and help to \u201creduce administrative burdens and operational inefficiency of requiring foreign nationals to obtain a study and work permit to complete one educational program\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It added that the proposals would support institutions\u2019 ability to attract top talent by reducing barriers for international students to\u00a0participate\u00a0in all elements of their study program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This change would reduce administrative burden and operational inefficiency<\/p>\n<p>Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)<\/p>\n<p>The proposals come as resourcing limits and policy turbulence have caused severe visa processing backlogs in Canada, where the waiting time on a work permit application from inside the country is 247 days, as of April 9.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They follow the publication of the Auditor General\u2019s report, which revealed\u00a0severe shortcomings in the country\u2019s International Student Program,\u00a0with stakeholders\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/canadas-auditor-general-report-confirms-sector-warnings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">calling for<\/a>\u00a0smarter and more differentiated visa processing to ease delays.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under the current system, international students enrolled in co-op or work-integrated learning programs must hold both a study permit and a work permit to complete their courses in Canada.\u00a0Similarly, apprentices must obtain a study permit on top of their work permit to\u00a0comlete\u00a0their\u00a0training.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For international graduates\u00a0who apply for a post-graduate work permit (PGWP) to stay in Canada after their studies, the change would allow them to work without a work permit while they await a visa decision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The department has launched consultations on the proposed amendments\u00a0and is\u00a0planning to\u00a0engage with stakeholders in early spring 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"ODY0LDksNjA=\"
