The City of Edmonton began its annual Spring Sweep street cleaning on Wednesday, with parking bans set to start on April 20.<\/p>\n
The Spring Sweep, where debris and dust gets cleared from roadways and City-serviced active pathways across Edmonton, will take place between April 8 and June 1 \u2013 weather permitting, the city said in a Thursday press release.<\/p>\n
The city says this maintenance helps to improve safety on roads and pathways, prevent debris from entering storm drains, improve air quality, and minimizes vehicle damage.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor cleaner and safer roads, bike lanes and major pathways, street cleaning is an essential service that removes debris and dust,\u201d said Val Dacyk, general supervisor of infrastructure field operations with the city, in the release.<\/p>\n
The city will also be issuing a parking ban as part of the Sweep, which begins on April 20.<\/p>\n
Major Roadway and Residential Sweeps<\/p>\n
The city begins their Spring Sweep with a focus on high-traffic locations like major roadways, business areas, boulevards, and arterial roads. The cleanup will is conducted 24 hours a day, but major roadways are generally swept at night when there are fewer parked vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo ensure crews can safely and completely clear all debris from curb to curb in residential areas, a temporary parking ban is necessary,\u201d Dacyk said. \u201cResidents must move their vehicles off the roadway when a parking ban is issued for their neighbourhood to avoid a ticket and enable crews to finish their work.\u201d<\/p>\n
While there will be no parking ban on major roadways, residential areas identified for sweeping will have a parking ban in place starting on April 20, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The parking ban is only active in residential neighbourhoods when crews are scheduled.<\/p>\n
The city encourages residents to remove driveway ramps from curbs when cleaning crews are in the area so they are not damaged during sweeping.\u00a0 Owners who fail to comply with the parking ban will receive a $250 fine per vehicle; vehicles will not be towed.<\/p>\n
