The Pirates took down Lake Dallas on April 9 to secure their first State Title in program history.<\/p>\n
WACO, Texas \u2014 The La Vega boys soccer team made program history Thursday, defeating Lake Dallas 1-0 to claim its first state championship.<\/p>\n
After a scoreless first half filled with scoring chances on both sides, the Pirates broke through less than four minutes into the second half. Sophomore forward Angel Cervantes Calvillo found the back of the net off an assist from Devani, giving La Vega the only goal it would need.<\/p>\n
Lake Dallas responded with a flurry of shots down the stretch, but La Vega\u2019s goalkeeper delivered a series of clutch saves to preserve the shutout and secure the title.<\/p>\n
Cervantes Calvillo\u2019s game-winning goal also earned him MVP honors.<\/p>\n
\u201cUh, it\u2019s crazy, to be honest. I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d get it,\u201d Cervantes Calvillo said. \u201cI thought it was gonna be my teammate Ramiro, #10. He\u2019s a beast. I know he\u2019s gonna make it far. And yeah, it just feels amazing to get MVP.\u201d<\/p>\n
For head coach Manny Gibson, the championship marks a fitting end to his tenure leading the program. Gibson is set to step down after the season to take over La Vega\u2019s baseball program.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s incredible\u2026 it\u2019s been such a long journey with these guys,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cI\u2019ve asked so much of them time and time again\u2026 We push them as hard as we can, so for them to get the results that came today, I\u2019m excited because it shows what you can do if you sacrifice and commit to doing something bigger and better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gibson also praised Cervantes Calvillo\u2019s decisive moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was pretty incredible,\u201d Gibson said. \u201cAngel\u2019s a special player\u2026 when he got that ball, I kind of thought it was gonna be. He just does special things in special moments.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Pirates\u2019 title run carries added significance as it caps Gibson\u2019s final season with the group he helped build.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was in my head. We gotta win this because it\u2019s his last year,\u201d Cervantes Calvillo said. \u201cWe gave it all for the team.\u201d<\/p>\n
