{"id":596398,"date":"2026-04-11T05:47:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T05:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/596398\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T05:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T05:47:12","slug":"restored-mill-home-made-of-blocks-chiselled-from-the-river-gorge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/596398\/","title":{"rendered":"Restored mill home made of blocks chiselled from the river gorge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">6 Millridge Estate Private, Elora, Ont.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Asking Price: $3.2-million<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Taxes: $10,687 (2025)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Lot Size: 98.5 by 131.9 feet<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Agent: Wendy Armstrong, Keller Williams Home Group Realty<\/p>\n<p>The Backstory<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In the early 1960s, Hugh Drew-Brook was driving the back-roads near Elora, Ont., when he spotted the crumbling walls of a stone building perched above a picturesque river gorge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Toronto-based engineer was searching for a singular property which he could turn into an interesting restoration project and weekend retreat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Drew-Brook, who died in 2025, learned the stones were the vestiges of a circa-1856 grist mill, according to his son, David Drew-Brook, who says his father\u2019s offer to buy the land from the local farmer who owned it was dismissed with a terse, \u201cit\u2019s not for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The elder Mr. Drew-Brook was a successful businessman who had the means to buy a stately existing house or build his own, but he became obsessed with the tumbledown stone walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cHe just couldn\u2019t get that mill out of his head,\u201d recalls his son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The businessman occasionally dropped in on the farmer and learned he was concerned Mr. Drew-Brook would use the land for junking cars or some other unsavoury purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He offered to have a lawyer draw up a legal agreement stating he would restore the building and turn it into a private dwelling. The farmer could also add his own conditions to the contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">His father\u2019s lengthy efforts won over the landowner, says Mr. Drew-Brook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Despite the incredulity of many locals, his father set out to rebuild the old structure. Even the farmer grew increasingly intrigued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe old guy started coming around. He\u2019d sit in a lawn chair and watch him,\u201d says the son. \u201cThey became friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/DNVGYW3PUFBJZDDXTRURFS3XCA.JPG?auth=606354fb81da63736002f881f6bdda8b3428e612dc1fb039589220e7b83f5a08&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Hugh Drew-Brook was a successful businessman who had the means to buy a stately existing house or build his own, but he became obsessed with the tumbledown stone walls of the property.visualadvantage.ca<\/p>\n<p>The Mill Today<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">After purchasing the property in 1965, Mr. Drew-Brook spent his weekends and holidays on the painstaking task of reassembling the walls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He put his son to work \u201clifting things, moving things, pulling out nails, straightening nails, sanding wood \u2013 anything a six-year-old could do,\u201d the younger Mr. Drew-Brook recalls with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A few hours of labour earned him his liberty to try fishing in the rushing waters of Irvine Creek, which flows into the larger Grand River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful river. It\u2019s all carved out of limestone,\u201d he says, adding that the workers carried stone up the cliff by hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThey chiselled the stone right out of the river to make the building,\u201d says the retired firefighter. \u201cI just can\u2019t imagine how tough everyone was back then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The creek\u2019s waterfall powered the workings of the mill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">His father acquired some antique barns from farms near Milton, Ont. and used the wood to create a post-and-beam interior with an open plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Over the years, the rustic cottage his father envisioned expanded into a comfortable home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Today, the two-storey house has five bedrooms and two bathrooms in more than 5,000 square feet of living space on one acre of land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The principal rooms include a living room with a wood stove, a dining area and a kitchen with a beamed ceiling and wood countertops crafted from 100-year-old planks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Mr. Drew-Brook tracked down some vintage industrial window frames made of iron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThey\u2019re hard to find,\u201d says his son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">There\u2019s a family room with walls clad in wood, sliding doors opening to the deck and access to a hot tub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The second storey has three bedrooms and a bathroom with a stand-alone tub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The elder Mr. Drew-Brook used the foundation of one century-old barn to build a stone wall and a stand-alone garage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The younger Mr. Drew-Brook says his father, who lived in the home until he was 94, spent decades working on the property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cHe was dedicated to that place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He recalls many family holidays and celebrations at the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In the early 1990s, the elder Mr. Drew-Brook purchased the historic theatre built in 1928 in the nearby town of Fergus and restored it as well. The renovated building became a venue for summer stock theatre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Over the years, the village of Salem, where the mill was located, has merged into the larger community of Elora.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The more well-known Elora Mill has operated for many years as a boutique hotel.
