A key piece of drinking water infrastructure now stands in a Surrey park.<\/p>\n
Metro Vancouver has finished work on Fleetwood Reservoir, which can hold 13.6 million litres of water for distribution to communities south of Fraser River.<\/p>\n
The concrete facility brings a new look to Meagan Anne MacDougall Park, at 9008 Fleetwood Way, two blocks northeast of the 152 Street\/Fraser Highway intersection.<\/p>\n
Adorning the reservoir maintenance building is a colourful glass mural by Elinor Atkins combining traditional Salish designs with contemporary elements.<\/p>\n
The art features a water droplet surrounded by two hands, mountains, salmon, salmonberries and figures representing past and future generations. Atkins added cedar to \u201cpurify\u201d the space for those viewing her art.<\/p>\n
Metro Vancouver boasts of planting twice as many trees as were removed for construction of the reservoir, with added benches and more 2,000 shrubs, grasses and groundcover plants.<\/p>\n
The new green area aims to provide year-round habitat for birds and butterflies. Interpretive signage tells park users about the artist and artwork, as well as the drinking water system and conservation. The City of Surrey will also design and install a new playground.<\/p>\n
