NASCAR Driver Chandler Smith finished second in Friday night’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race but left with mixed emotions after confusion over the Triple Truck Challenge bonus. Smith drove the No. 38 Ford for Front Row Motorsports and led the most laps among full-time Truck drivers.

After the race, early reports suggested he had earned the $50,000 bonus as the top-finishing series regular. That information later proved incorrect. NASCAR officials confirmed that only the race winner qualifies for the bonus. The update came shortly after the race and ended any celebration. The result stood as a strong finish, but the situation added an unexpected twist to Smith’s night.

NASCAR Clarifies Triple Truck Challenge Rule after the Race

Christopher Bell took the lead late and won the WEATHER GUARD Truck Race. Smith finished second overall and was the highest-finishing full-time Truck Series driver. That result led to early confusion about the bonus.

NASCAR later confirmed the rule requires a race win, not just the top finish among series regulars. The clarification came after Smith and his team had already reacted to the earlier reports.

Smith addressed the situation cautiously, pointing to what had happened the week before.

“It takes a little bit of the sting out, but we haven’t gone through tech yet, so I’m not going to get too excited. Last week, I thought we had a solid, blue-collar day. A fourth-place finish, spent time with my buddies and family, then my crew chief calls me two hours later and says we got disqualified. I thought he was joking. So I’m not going to count my eggs before they hatch.”

Chandler Smith says the Truck had Speed but Needed More Time

NASCAR Driver Chandler Smith said his truck had the pace to compete for the win, but the race conditions limited what he could show.

“We had a truck capable of winning, but the way the race played out, we weren’t going to be able to showcase it.”

He explained that his truck improved over longer runs, which made it harder to fight for the lead late in the race.

“To challenge Christopher at the end, I probably needed 20 more laps. It took a long time for my truck to get going. Early in a run, I had the least grip, but the longer I ran, the more grip I picked up. Everyone else seemed to be the opposite. They’d fire off strong, then start slipping, while I’d start reeling them back in.”

Bell pulled away at first, but Smith began to close the gap near the finish. The laps ran out before he could make a move.

Track Conditions at Bristol Motor Speedway Felt Different from Last Year

NASCAR Driver Chandler Smith also described changes in the track surface during the race. He said the grip level stood out compared to previous events.

“It looked darker, and it definitely felt different. They said it was the same application as last year, but it was a lot grippier. It actually felt more like 2019. If you stepped the left rear out even a little, you were in trouble. The surface didn’t really wear out, and the top lane never fully came in.”

After the race, Smith kept a light tone despite the confusion. He shared a brief moment with a NASCAR official that turned into a joking exchange.

He also kept focus on his team’s performance and recent form.

“Overall, it was a solid day. We’ve been bringing fast trucks and getting good results. I’m proud of this No. 38 team and looking forward to Texas.”

Dogli Wilberforce is a writer covering NASCAR, Formula 1, and the IndyCar Series for Heavy Sports.
