{"id":597688,"date":"2026-04-11T19:59:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T19:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/597688\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T19:59:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T19:59:13","slug":"steelers-have-growing-first-round-option","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/597688\/","title":{"rendered":"Steelers Have Growing First-Round Option"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">As much attention as wide receiver, offensive guard and safety have received as the top options for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/steelers\/onsi\/news\/pittsburgh-steelers-joey-porter-jr-revenge-george-pickens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> in the first round of the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/steelers\/onsi\/news\/pittsburgh-steelers-could-major-advantage-nfl-draft-trades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NFL Draft<\/a>, another position could be gaining steam. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/steelers\/onsi\/news\/pittsburgh-steelers-most-overlooked-draft-prospect-keylan-rutledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steelers<\/a> have done an admirable job of filling their roster holes this offseason, but they have yet to add a single offensive tackle thus far outside of bringing back Jack Driscoll, who&#8217;s likely ticketed for a practice squad spot.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">It helps that it has 12 picks to work with, but considering its situation on the left side of the line in particular, it would behoove Pittsburgh to select a tackle at No. 21 overall, or perhaps earlier if it trades up. <\/p>\n<p>Left Tackle is a Huge Question Mark<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6s\">Between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/steelers\/onsi\/news\/pittsburgh-steelers-positive-sign-broderick-jones-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Broderick Jones<\/a> and Dylan Cook, there are a long list of reasons to be concerned about the Steelers&#8217; blindside protection in 2026. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6v\">For Jones, it&#8217;s mostly a question of his health and durability after suffering a serious neck injury in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6y\">He was seen on the field with the rest of the team during Phase 1 of Pittsburgh&#8217;s offseason program under new head coach Mike McCarthy, but that&#8217;s not nearly enough to quell all of the doubts about his status moving forward. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"71\">General manager Omar Khan told reporters at the annual league meetings that Jones is, &#8220;starting to do more and more,&#8221; which came before the start of Phase 1, but it&#8217;s really all a waiting and guessing game at this point. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">Jones is also heading into what&#8217;s effectively the final season of his rookie contract since it appears unlikely that the organization will pick up his fifth-year option. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">Cook, who was the Steelers&#8217; starting left tackle for the final five weeks of the 2025 campaign as well as their Wild Card round playoff loss to the Houston Texans, played well during the first regular season opportunity of his career, allowing only one sack in 289 snaps at left tackle per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/nfl\/players\/dylan-cook\/91689\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pro Football Focus<\/a>, but that sample size is far too small to draw any concrete conclusions from. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01knw23tem9j6rnn650m.jpg\" alt=\"Utah Utes offensive lineman Caleb Lomu\" title=\"Utah Utes offensive lineman Caleb Lomu\" width=\"1788\" height=\"1192\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"7h\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Nov 28, 2025; Lawrence, Kansas, USA; Utah Utes offensive lineman Caleb Lomu (71) gets ready before the snap during the second half against the Kansas Jayhawks at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.
