Pickering says an educational campaign to crack down on littering is working.<\/p>\n

Their \u201cLittering? That\u2019s so Trash\u201d campaign launched last year to raise awareness about the issue and the city says people took notice.<\/p>\n

Since then, more than 300 cases were reported through Pickering\u2019s Customer Care Centre \u2013 a 25 per cent increase. As a result, bylaw officers have stepped up enforcement in areas where there are the most complaints and continued to pursue charges when evidence permits. Since the start of the campaign, they\u2019ve laid 50 charges for illegal dumping.<\/p>\n

\u201cResponding to careless littering and illegal dumping puts a strain on municipal resources,\u201d said Mayor Kevin Ashe. \u201cA cleaner\u00a0Pickering\u00a0starts with all of us. When the community reports, responds, and stands together, we are stronger \u2013 and those who disrespect our city are put on notice. We have seen tremendous support from the community, and the public response to this campaign makes it clear that there is no tolerance for this type of behaviour in\u00a0Pickering. I want to thank everyone who has helped raise awareness and take pride in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n
