GRAND FORKS \u2014 When Abram Wiebe took the ice by himself for a pre-warmup lap Saturday afternoon in Seattle, about 40 family and friends stood on the glass cheering.<\/p>\n

They wore Wiebe’s jerseys, ranging from his time playing minor hockey in Mission, B.C., to the Chilliwack Chiefs in the British Columbia Hockey League, to his most recent jersey at UND.<\/p>\n

Wiebe, who played the last three seasons for UND, made his NHL debut with the Calgary Flames on Saturday in Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.<\/p>\n

He became the 113th former UND player to play in the NHL and the second to make his debut this season.<\/p>\n

Wiebe played 18 shifts for a total of 11:19 of ice time. He registered an even rating and was called for one minor penalty.<\/p>\n

“I thought he did fine,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “That’s a tough one for him after travel, just finishing off with his team, coming in and not really being around our group at all until this morning. I think he handled himself just fine.”<\/p>\n

It has been a whirlwind couple of days for Wiebe.<\/p>\n

He played in the NCAA Frozen Four with UND on Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas, falling 2-1 to Wisconsin. Wiebe signed his contract hours after the game ended.<\/p>\n

Instead of flying home with the Fighting Hawks on Friday, he flew to Seattle, where he met up with the Flames.<\/p>\n

Then, he played in the NHL a day later.<\/p>\n

Wiebe was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights, but Vegas traded his rights to Calgary as part of the deal for defenseman Rasmus Andersson.<\/p>\n

Wiebe had a terrific junior season with UND, scoring five goals and tallying 29 points in 40 games. He earned all-National Collegiate Hockey Conference honors, helping lead the Fighting Hawks to the Penrose Cup.<\/p>\n

Another former UND player is expected to debut soon.<\/p>\n

Junior defenseman Jake Livanavage signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins as an undrafted free agent and could play as soon as Sunday.<\/p>\n

Livanavage attended Pittsburgh’s game on Saturday.<\/p>\n
